Job description

About the Position Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating solid waste collection and transport equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Job Duties Operates transfer truck and heavy construction equipment to transport recyclable materials, refuse and other materials to landfill, collection sites or other disposal locations.

Operates backhoe, forklift, bobcat, and other equipment in the day to day performance of duties at landfills, recycling centers and transfer centers. Performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs on vehicles and equipment. Performs large item removal/relocation as necessary.

Assists with storm and natural disaster cleanup. Performs other assigned duties. Position Qualifications General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment.

General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation. General knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work. Skill in the care and operation of medium to heavy automotive equipment.

Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment. Ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates and the general public.

Knowledge of Dare County operations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.

Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing. Skill in the use of various types of office equipment (e.g., copier, fax, document scanner, multi-line telephone system, etc.). Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public. Education, Experience and Supplemental Information High school diploma or equivalent.

One to three (1-3) years of experience in related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Valid North Carolina driver's license (Successful completion of In-House CDL Certification required within 6 months of hire) Valid CDL minimum of Class B driver's license recommended.
