What are D-Wave systems and what do they do?

D-Wave is a company that develops quantum computers, specifically quantum annealers, which are designed to solve complex optimization and sampling problems faster than traditional computers. Their systems use quantum bits (qubits) to explore multiple solutions simultaneously, making them suitable for tasks in machine learning, financial modeling, logistics, and more. D-Wave's technology is being used by researchers and businesses to tackle real-world challenges that are difficult for classical computers to process efficiently.

What are some unique challenges faced when working as a quantum software developer at D-Wave?

Working as a quantum software developer at D-Wave involves tackling the complexities of programming for quantum annealing systems, which differ significantly from classical computing paradigms. Developers must frequently collaborate with physicists and hardware engineers to optimize algorithms for quantum hardware constraints, and adapt quickly to evolving technologies and frameworks. Additionally, because the field is rapidly advancing, staying up-to-date with the latest research and best practices is essential for success. This environment offers exciting opportunities for learning but also requires adaptability and strong problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a D-Wave Quantum Computing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a D-Wave Quantum Computing Engineer, you need a strong background in quantum physics, computer science, and mathematics, often supported by a relevant degree or advanced research experience. Familiarity with D-Wave's Ocean SDK, quantum annealing algorithms, programming languages like Python, and experience using quantum computing platforms are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills in this innovative field. These competencies enable engineers to design, implement, and optimize quantum solutions that address complex computational challenges.

What is the difference between D Wave vs Data Engineer?

AspectD WaveData Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a background in quantum computing, physics, or computer scienceRequires a degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field; certifications in data management are common
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, quantum computing companies, or tech firms focusing on quantum solutionsTech companies, finance, healthcare, and other industries managing large data systems

At D-Wave, we're helping customers realize the value of quantum computing today and are shaping the quantum-driven industrial and societal advancements of tomorrow.
About the role
D-Wave is seeking a talented and self-motivated Quantum error correction (QEC) theorist to join our gate-model Quantum Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to novel error correction research and development that will push the boundaries of QEC using our dual-rail cavity qubit architecture. This position is ideal for researchers with a strong foundation in error correction and who also enjoy close scientific collaboration with experimental physicists and engineering teams.
What you'll do
  • Conduct pathfinding QEC research tailored for dual-rail cavity qubits for near-term and scalable fault-tolerant computing applications
  • Perform research towards fault-tolerant computation using erasure qubits on a broad range of QEC topics, including exploration of error correcting codes, lattice surgery, magic state preparation, decoders, and many more
  • Perform logical error rate and resource estimation investigation for QEC architectures
  • Design and perform detailed, hardware-accurate simulations of novel QEC protocols
  • Contribute meaningfully to D-wave's roadmap to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation with the dual-rail architecture

About You
  • Ph.D. and/or a Master's degree with 2 years of relevant experience in Quantum Computing, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated research track record in QEC codes, fault-tolerant protocols, and/or QEC simulations/modeling
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, Rust, Julia, MATLAB, C, C++ or similar)
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills especially with working in interdisciplinary teams with professionals from other fields of physics and engineering
