Job Summary

Responsible for high voltage, medium voltage, and low voltage transmission and distribution line designs for Powering New York (PNY). Line designs include structural or electrical calculations, routing, review and preparation of engineering drawings. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines & 621 substations. Position reports to the Unit Manager PNY Projects but will work day-to-day in a cross-functional project team and support project needs as directed by the project manager(s).

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates larger scale engineering projects, scheduling and cost tracking, and coordination support for the PNY Department.
  • Responsible for leading and creating new conceptual designs and overseeing the work of external detailed designers.
  • Develop and validate information needed for engineering analyses and apply engineering judgment to solve technical problems,
  • Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems or to improve processes/services,
  • Ensure all engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes, and standards,
  • Oversee engineering studies to evaluate equipment and system performance and effectiveness and analyze operational issues in support of system reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Provides preliminary designs and estimates in support of capital budget plans and System Planning studies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Experience Required:
    • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline from accredited university/college and 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required
    • Experience in engineering including electric transmission, distribution, or field engineering work.
    • Experience in the delivery of projects, as necessary
    • Relevant network construction and operational experience to include field inspections
  • Technical Skills/Competencies
    • Theoretical Engineering knowledge: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytics, Modeling & Calculation (e.g., sym. Components, per unit, etc.), Understanding the Business Model
    • Practical Engineering Experience/Application: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g., field experience, standardization, develop business case and defend in front of stakeholders)
    • Engineering documentation: Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation, review, and approve engineering work done by others
    • Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment: Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and Requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, PUC, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering license or Engineer in Training is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of project management.
