What does a customer service manager do?

As a customer service manager, your job is to train the rest of the customer service staff and help develop their skills. You may help them learn how to greet customers, how to assist customers with problems, and how to remain professional when dealing with demanding customers. As a manager, your job also includes helping meet customer satisfaction targets, improving customer loyalty, and supporting the actions of the sales departments. Customer service managers often make recommendations for improving performance and work with the human resources department to hire employees and make decisions on disciplinary matters. You also provide direct customer service during staffing shortages or times of unusually high call volume.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a customer service manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Customer Service Manager, you need strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and experience in customer service, often backed by a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Familiarity with CRM software (such as Salesforce or Zendesk), data analysis tools, and customer feedback systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team motivation skills help someone excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring high customer satisfaction, efficient team operations, and continuous service improvement.

What are some common challenges faced by customer service managers and how can they be addressed?

Job description

Service Manager — Riverton Acura

Location: Murray, Utah Department: Service Employment Type: Full-Time Compensation: Competitive, based on experience

About Us

Riverton Acura is growing, and we're looking for a Service Manager who leads from the front. This is a chance to build and run a service department the right way — with a strong team, high standards, and real accountability. If you're currently a Service Advisor or Assistant Service Manager ready to step into the top seat, we want to hear from you.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, coach, and hold the service team accountable — advisors, technicians, and support staff
  • Build a culture of hard work, teamwork, and customer-first service
  • Own department KPIs: CP hours per RO, effective labor rate, fixed absorption, CSI, and technician efficiency
  • Manage day-to-day workflow, scheduling, and dispatch to keep the shop running efficiently
  • Recruit, train, and develop advisors and technicians; build a bench for future growth
  • Handle customer escalations with professionalism and a solutions mindset
  • Manage service operations through Dealertrack DMS
  • Partner with Parts and Sales leadership to support overall fixed ops performance
  • Ensure compliance with Acura/AHM service standards and warranty procedures

What We're Looking For

  • Proven leadership ability — someone who can build, motivate, and hold a team accountable
  • Strong work ethic and a hands-on, lead-by-example approach
  • Experience as a Service Advisor or Assistant Service Manager; dealership service department background required
  • Working knowledge of Dealertrack DMS preferred
  • Solid understanding of service department KPIs and how to drive them
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment
  • Acura or import brand experience a plus, but not required

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Christmas savings match program
  • Employee purchase/service/parts/vehicle savings

Riverton Acura is an equal opportunity employer.
