A custom automotive technician is a professional who specializes in modifying, restoring, or personalizing vehicles to meet specific client preferences or performance goals. Their work can include custom paint jobs, installing aftermarket parts, upgrading engines, suspension tuning, interior modifications, and more. These technicians often work on classic cars, hot rods, sports cars, or off-road vehicles, blending mechanical skills with creativity and attention to detail. They may be employed by specialty shops or operate their own businesses, working closely with clients to bring unique automotive visions to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a custom automotive technician?

To thrive as a Custom Automotive Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, detailed knowledge of automotive systems, and experience or certification in automotive technology. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, specialized fabrication equipment, and software for tuning or design is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication with clients are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure high-quality, tailored modifications that meet client expectations and adhere to safety standards.

Collaborating closely with clients to understand their vision and maintaining clear communication with suppliers and team members can help address these challenges. Staying up-to-date with industry trends and regulations, as well as developing strong problem-solving skills, are also essential for success in this field.

Master-Level Automotive Technician / Builder (Custom Cars & Coachbuilding)

Company: SaltWorks MFG
Location: Sarasota, FL
Job Type: Full-Time
We are not a dealership.

If your skillset is scanning codes and swapping parts, this is not your lane.
We are a high-end custom automotive and coachbuilding shop building one-off vehicles at the highest level. Every car is different. Every system is integrated from scratch. Every detail matters.
We need a true mechanic / builder who can think, diagnose, fabricate, and execute.
What You’ll Actually Do

  •  Diagnose and solve complex mechanical and electrical problems without a playbook
  •  Assemble full vehicles from bare chassis to final delivery
  •  Integrate drivetrains, suspension systems, braking systems, and electronics
  •  Work with custom and OEM components in the same build
  •  Collaborate with fabrication, trim, and engineering teams
  •  Own your work—quality, function, and finish
What We’re Looking For

  •  3+ years hands-on experience (custom, restoration, race, or high-end performance preferred)
  •  Strong diagnostic ability (not just parts replacement)
  •  Deep understanding of:
    •  Engine systems (LS, LT, Coyote, etc.)
    •  Suspension geometry and setup
    •  Electrical systems and wiring integration
  •  Ability to problem-solve without constant direction
  •  Pride in craftsmanship and attention to detail
Bonus Skills (Not Required, But Valuable)

  •  Experience with custom builds or hot rods
  •  Ability to fabricate or modify components as needed
  •  Familiarity with CAN systems, aftermarket ECUs, or wiring systems
  •  Experience working alongside CAD/CNC and engineering teams
What You Won’t Be Doing

  •  Flat rate work
  •  Warranty jobs
  •  Repetitive dealership tasks
  •  Being micromanaged
What You Get

  •  Work on some of the highest-end custom builds in the country
  •  A team that cares about quality, not shortcuts
  •  Clean, organized, professional shop environment
  •  Competitive pay based on skill level
  •  Opportunity to grow into leadership roles
Our Standard

At SaltWorks, we operate on:
  •  Do it Right
  •  Customer First
  •  Quality is Job 1
  •  Cleanliness
  •  Imagination
  •  Teamwork
If that resonates, you’ll fit here.
