Job description

Job Summary:
Colas USA is one of North America’s largest road and infrastructure groups, and they are seeking a Senior Power BI Developer to design and own their enterprise semantic layer. This role involves delivering high-impact reporting for the Enterprise Reporting & Data Warehouse platform, optimizing data models, and mentoring team members.
Responsibilities:
• Design, build, and own enterprise-grade semantic data models (dimensional / star-schema) that serve as long-lived, reusable IP for the organization.
• Develop and optimize advanced DAX measures and calculation logic—including time intelligence and calculation groups—for correctness and performance.
• Design, develop, and deploy interactive Power BI reports and dashboards that communicate insights clearly to business stakeholders.
• Apply data-visualization and UX best practices—including accessibility (WCAG) and mobile / responsive design—so reports are intuitive, consistent, and performant.
• Build paginated, print-ready reports using Power BI Report Builder and Power BI Report Server (PBIRS)—leveraging Power BI semantic models through XMLA endpoints, DAX, and shared dataset-based reporting for operational and financial reporting.
• Manage Power BI development using the Power BI Project (PBIP) format under source control, and build and maintain CI/CD for Power BI—Git-integrated workspaces, deployment pipelines, and automated validation—to promote content reliably from development to test to production.
• Optimize model and report performance (VertiPaq analysis, query folding, aggregations, incremental refresh, composite models, and DAX tuning).
• Implement row-level and object-level security (RLS / OLS), sensitivity labels, and endorsements (certified / promoted datasets) to protect data and build trust in reports.
• Partner with data engineering to source and shape data from Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and other sources (Power Query / M) and validate data quality.
• Manage and govern the Power BI Service—workspaces, datasets, deployment pipelines, scheduled refreshes, capacity / Premium, and usage monitoring.
• Contribute to the BI / analytics roadmap and define enterprise semantic-model and reporting standards, reusable patterns, and best practices.
• Mentor developers and coach citizen developers; collaborate with product owners, business analysts, and stakeholders to translate requirements and KPIs into effective BI solutions.
• Document semantic models, data lineage, and report design; provide user training and support.
• Leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate model and report development, documentation, and testing while validating outcomes.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience building solutions specifically in Power BI, backed by 10 years of overall business intelligence and reporting experience across tools such as SSRS, SSAS, Crystal Reports, Cognos, Tableau, and SAP Business Objects.
• Proven track record of owning enterprise semantic models and delivering reporting at scale.
• Expert in dimensional / star-schema design and building scalable, reusable enterprise semantic models in Power BI (must-have).
• Deep proficiency in DAX—advanced patterns, time intelligence, calculation groups, variables, and performance tuning (must-have).
• Expert with Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service (workspaces, datasets, refresh management).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Fabric—OneLake, Lakehouse, Direct Lake—and building semantic models over Fabric / Databricks sources.
• Power BI Report Builder and PBIRS; building paginated (RDL) reports on Power BI semantic models via XMLA endpoints, DAX, and shared datasets.
• Power BI Project (PBIP) format for source-controlled development; Git integration, deployment pipelines, and CI/CD automation for Power BI workspaces (Azure DevOps / GitHub).
• Skilled in data transformation, cleansing, and query folding.
• Strong SQL / T-SQL for querying, data validation, and troubleshooting across sources.
• VertiPaq analysis, aggregations, incremental refresh, composite models, and DAX / query optimization.
• Row-level and object-level security (RLS / OLS), sensitivity labels, endorsements, workspace governance, capacity / Premium management, and usage monitoring.
• Proficient querying relational and analytic sources (SQL, Azure Synapse, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric / OneLake).
• Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and ETL / ELT processes.
• Hands-on experience across legacy and modern BI/reporting tools (SSRS, SSAS, Crystal Reports, Cognos, Tableau, Business Objects) is highly valued.
• Ability to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Working effectively with cross-functional teams including developers, project managers, and business analysts.
• Analyzing issues and developing effective solutions while considering constraints and trade-offs.
• Mentoring team members and influencing technical decision-making.
• Openness to change and emerging technologies.
• Evaluating options and making informed decisions.
• Prioritizing tasks effectively across multiple initiatives.
• Understanding team and stakeholder perspectives to foster collaboration.
Preferred:
• Preferred certifications: Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst Associate) and / or DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate); Azure DP-900 a plus.
• Familiarity with finance reporting (and construction, equipment, or safety domains) a plus.
