How much do cruise ship engineer jobs pay per year?
What does a cruise ship engineer do?
A Cruise Ship Engineer is responsible for maintaining and operating the ship's mechanical, electrical, and technical systems. They ensure the vessel runs smoothly by overseeing engines, generators, water systems, and other critical components. Engineers also perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and follow safety regulations to prevent malfunctions. Their role is essential for the safety and efficiency of the ship's operations.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cruise ship engineer?
To thrive as a Cruise Ship Engineer, you need strong knowledge of marine engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, and typically a degree in marine engineering or a related field along with relevant seafaring certifications (such as STCW). Familiarity with maintenance management systems, engine room controls, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Excellent teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure will help you excel onboard. These skills and qualities ensure the vessel runs safely and efficiently while complying with strict maritime regulations and supporting a large crew and passenger base.
What are the typical working hours and conditions for a cruise ship engineer?
Cruise Ship Engineers usually work in rotational shifts to ensure that the ship’s technical operations are supervised around the clock, meaning you may work evenings, nights, or weekends depending on your schedule. The work environment involves spending extended periods at sea and in the engine room, which can be physically demanding and requires attention to safety protocols. You'll work as part of a technical team, collaborating closely with other engineers, electricians, and deck officers to keep all systems functioning smoothly. This role offers the opportunity to develop specialized maritime skills while experiencing life at sea, and dedicated engineers can progress to senior positions such as chief engineer over time.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead technology projects supporting cruise ship newbuilds, revitalizations, and drydock programs from planning through implementation, testing, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Develop and manage integrated project plans covering scope, schedule, milestones, dependencies, resources, risks, and budget.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams across IT, ship operations, shipyard, construction, engineering, procurement, vendors, and technology partners.
- Ensure technology requirements are aligned with ship design, construction schedules, infrastructure readiness, and operational objectives.
- Manage critical dependencies related to cabling, power, HVAC, rack readiness, network infrastructure, equipment delivery, installation access, and construction completion.
- Drive installation, integration, testing, commissioning, and acceptance of shipboard technology systems.
- Lead execution readiness, tabletop reviews, cutover planning, and go-live activities for time-sensitive shipyard and drydock periods.
- Proactively identify risks, schedule conflicts, technical gaps, and readiness issues, and drive mitigation and recovery plans.
- Manage vendors and contractors to ensure delivery, installation, testing, and documentation commitments are achieved.
- Provide clear executive-level reporting on project progress, milestones, risks, dependencies, decisions required, and overall project health.
- Facilitate timely decision-making and escalation when issues threaten critical path activities or vessel delivery schedules.
- Manage project changes and assess impacts to scope, cost, schedule, technical design, and operational readiness.
- Ensure appropriate testing, documentation, training, support models, and handover to shipboard and shoreside operational teams.
- Maintain strong project governance, accountability, action tracking, and stakeholder alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
- Capture lessons learned and continuously improve technology delivery standards for future newbuild and drydock programs.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in either Business Administration, Marketing, Engineering, Architecture, Management Information Systems or related field of study or any equivalent combination of experience and skills.
EXPERIENCE:
- 5+ years of project management experience, preferably within cruise, maritime, shipbuilding, or related technology environments.
- Experience leading technology projects for newbuilds, drydocks, revitalizations, or major vessel upgrades.
- Strong understanding of shipyard execution, construction sequencing, commissioning, critical milestones, and constrained implementation windows.
- Experience coordinating technology deployments across infrastructure, networks, communications, security, guest-facing, and operational systems.
- Proven ability to manage dependencies across IT, engineering, construction, procurement, vendors, and ship operations.
- Strong knowledge of project planning, scheduling, risk management, change control, budget tracking, and critical path management.
- Experience managing vendors, contractors, technical teams, testing, commissioning, cutover, and operational handover.
- Strong executive communication, stakeholder management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively in global, multicultural environments, including travel to shipyards and vessels.
- PMP or similar certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Strong leadership, ownership, and ability to drive execution in complex, fast-paced environments.
- Excellent stakeholder management and ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- Strong understanding of technology infrastructure, systems integration, and deployment dependencies.
- Ability to anticipate risks, identify gaps, and develop practical mitigation and recovery plans.
- Strong planning, organization, prioritization, and critical path management skills.
- Effective vendor, contractor, and partner management capabilities.
- Excellent executive communication and ability to translate complex issues into clear, actionable information.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to remain effective under schedule pressure and adapt quickly to changing project conditions.
- Strong collaboration skills with technical, operational, construction, and shipboard teams.
- High level of accountability, attention to detail, and commitment to successful delivery.
- Comfortable working in global, multicultural, and highly matrixed organizations.
