Job Description
This role involves supervising inmate "trustees" (low-level offenders) while they perform community-oriented work, such as cleaning and maintaining an animal shelter, oversee inmates in support of a variety of programs, lawn maintenance, minor facility repairs, and other work projects.
Position Duties
These tasks represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the\class as necessary.
  • Responsible for transporting inmates, assigning and supervising work, and maintaining security.
  • Transports inmates to and from the Jail Complex.
  • Receives work assignments; prepares crew assignment sheets and assigns work.
  • Assists with establishing safety standards for assigned work area.
  • Assists with the planning of projects.
  • Supervises and controls inmate workers; monitors for difficulties and intervenes if necessary.
  • Assures inmates are following rules and procedures; assures all inmates are accounted for and contained in appropriate area.
  • Train inmates in work methods, use of tools and equipment, and relevant safety precautions.
  • Assists with the cleaning and disinfecting of work areas, including animal yards, pens, and cages.
  • Prepares forms, logs, and reports documenting crew activities.
  • Attends meeting to exchange information; attends in-service training.
  • May train inmates to work with dogs, teaching basic obedience, socialization, and sometimes specialized tasks for service dogs.
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires high school diploma or GED.
  • Requires a Florida Driver's License (must maintain for duration of employment).
  • Requires a minimum of six (6) months of supervisor experience.
  • This position requires successful completion of the Sheriff's Office pre-employment medical certification.

Additional Information
Work is generally performed outdoors managing the activities of trustees performing community-oriented work such as collecting roadside garbage, or animal services related work.
* Full time work schedule is 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Tuesday - Saturday OR Sunday - Thursday, including holidays. Flexibility is required in work schedule to accommodate operational needs to include evenings, and working varying shifts any day of the week.
*Part time work schedule is 7:30 am - 12:30 PM Sunday -Thursday including holidays. Flexibility is required in work schedule to accommodate operational needs to include evenings, and working varying shifts any day of the week.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks, and pre-employment medical physical. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
