How much do credit risk modeling jobs pay per year?
What is credit risk modeling?
A Credit Risk Modeling job involves developing statistical models and analytical techniques to assess the credit risk of individuals or businesses. Professionals in this role analyze financial data, borrower behavior, and economic trends to predict the likelihood of default and assist in making informed lending decisions. They use techniques such as logistic regression, machine learning, and Monte Carlo simulations to quantify risk. Credit risk modelers work closely with risk management teams, regulators, and financial institutions to ensure compliance with industry standards. Their insights help optimize loan approvals, set credit limits, and manage overall portfolio risk.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in credit risk modeling?
To thrive in Credit Risk Modeling, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics and finance, and typically a degree in mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages like Python, R, or SAS, as well as experience using statistical modeling software and risk management platforms, are highly valued. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaborative abilities help translate complex data insights for stakeholders and work effectively within cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for designing accurate risk models that inform sound lending decisions and maintain financial stability for organizations.
What are the typical daily responsibilities in credit risk modeling?
Professionals in Credit Risk Modeling spend their days developing and validating statistical models to assess the likelihood of credit defaults, analyzing large data sets to identify risk factors, and compiling detailed reports on their findings. They collaborate closely with data scientists, underwriters, credit analysts, and sometimes regulatory teams to ensure models meet business and compliance standards. Additionally, they often participate in meetings to discuss portfolio performance or proposed policy changes. This role involves a balance of technical analysis, documentation, and cross-functional communication, making it dynamic and integral to financial decision-making.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Help shape the credit risk strategies that power one of the world's largest credit card portfolios. Join a team that challenges the status quo, applies rigorous analytics, and turns insights into responsible growth. You'll partner with stakeholders across the card lifecycle to identify emerging risks, improve controls, and optimize portfolio outcomes. If you bring curiosity, ownership, and a bias for action, you'll have a real platform to make impact.
As an Associate - Cards Strategic Analytics (Credit Risk Strategy) in CCB Risk Cards Strategic Analytics, you will lead quantitative and qualitative analyses to develop, implement, and monitor credit risk strategies across the card product lifecycle (underwriting, account management, and collections).
You will influence key business decisions by translating complex customer behavior and portfolio performance signals into practical policy recommendations, measurable controls, and senior-ready insights. You will operate at the center of Risk Management and Compliance, helping ensure strategies remain within risk appetite, aligned to regulatory expectations, and focused on long-term portfolio performance.
Job responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end analytics to measure, challenge, and improve key business initiatives, generating solutions independently
- Define clear problem statements, hypotheses, and success metrics to evaluate risks, opportunities, and trade-offs
- Develop and refine credit program policies, strategies, processes, and procedures within the assigned function
- Analyze customer and portfolio performance trends using statistical, data mining, and quantitative methodologies
- Conduct root-cause deep dives to diagnose performance shifts and identify actionable levers across the lifecycle
- Design ongoing monitoring and reporting to detect emerging trends in origination quality and portfolio health
- Translate complex analytical results into concise recommendations, executive-level materials, and stakeholder-ready narratives
- Partner cross-functionally to secure stakeholder buy-in and drive implementation from concept through rollout
- Strengthen operational controls by identifying gaps, proposing enhancements, and validating strategy execution outcomes
- Support the risk management framework by documenting approach, maintaining governance discipline, and ensuring alignment to requirements
- Monitor internal/external behavioral signals, industry trends, and regulatory developments to continuously improve risk processes
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Finance, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Operations Research, Econometrics)
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in analytics, risk strategy, consulting, business analysis, or related financial/quantitative roles (typically 3 - 7 years preferred range for this level)
- Demonstrate strong analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to structure ambiguous problems into executable analyses
- Apply proficiency in SQL and at least one analytics tool/language such as SAS, Python, or R (Tableau experience acceptable for visualization-focused work)
- Build clear, accurate, and repeatable monitoring/insight routines to track performance and emerging risk signals
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including preparing executive-level summaries and recommendations
- Present complex findings with clarity, including concise PowerPoint storytelling and sound business conclusions
- Manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines with strong project management, attention to detail, and follow-through
- Collaborate successfully with diverse stakeholders and build durable partnerships across functions
- Exhibit high initiative, self-direction, and strong judgment in decision-making and escalation
- Maintain authorization to work in the United States (this role does not offer employment-based immigration sponsorship, including OPT/CPT support)
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Bring prior experience in the credit card industry, especially in credit strategy, policy, underwriting, or portfolio management roles
- Show experience influencing strategy decisions through analytics, including stakeholder alignment and implementation support
- Demonstrate familiarity with full lifecycle credit concepts (e.g., originations quality, line management, risk-based treatments, collections optimization)
- Leverage experience combining internal behavioral data with external/public information (market, industry, regulatory) to inform strategy
- Apply advanced proficiency in Excel (modeling), PowerPoint (executive storytelling), and/or Tableau (dashboards/visualization)
- Exhibit comfort operating in controlled, compliance-oriented environments with strong documentation and governance habits
- Display intellectual curiosity and a continuous-improvement mindset to enhance frameworks, controls, and monitoring processes
