Credit Risk Data Science information

What is credit risk data science?

Credit Risk Data Science is a specialized field that uses statistical analysis, machine learning, and data modeling techniques to assess and predict the likelihood that a borrower will default on a loan or credit obligation. Professionals in this field analyze large datasets from financial transactions, credit reports, and market trends to develop models that help financial institutions make informed lending decisions. Their work helps manage risk, set appropriate interest rates, and comply with regulatory standards. By leveraging advanced analytics, credit risk data scientists play a crucial role in minimizing losses and maximizing profitability for banks and lenders.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a credit risk data scientist?

To thrive as a Credit Risk Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistical modeling, and a solid background in finance, mathematics, or a related field, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with machine learning frameworks, and knowledge of credit risk modeling tools such as SAS or SQL are typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with stakeholders. These abilities are crucial for building accurate risk models, informing strategic decisions, and ensuring regulatory compliance in financial institutions.

How does a credit risk data scientist typically collaborate with other teams within a financial institution?

Credit Risk Data Scientists often work closely with credit analysts, risk managers, and IT professionals to develop, validate, and implement models that assess borrower risk. They frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to translate complex analytical findings into actionable business insights. Collaboration with compliance and regulatory teams is also common to ensure that risk models meet current regulatory standards. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the role bridges technical model development and practical risk management decisions.

What you will do:
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of Data and Decision Science professionals, providing coaching, mentorship, and strategic direction while representing the organization in senior leadership and client engagements.

  • Drive the AI/ML strategy for existing merchant portfolios, leveraging merchant, transaction, and third-party data to develop data-driven capabilities, predictive models, and automated decision frameworks that improve risk management, merchant experience, and business growth.

  • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of predictive models, optimized decision frameworks, and automated risk controls, from opportunity identification and development through deployment, monitoring, and optimization.

  • Generate actionable insights from payment network, merchant, and risk data, applying innovative analytical techniques to prevent fraud and credit losses, optimize portfolio performance, and support growth across digital and traditional channels.

  • Partner with business, product, technology, and risk stakeholders to translate complex business challenges into scalable analytical solutions that balance risk management, merchant experience, and growth objectives.

  • Lead the modernization of risk analytics and decisioning capabilities, including the adoption of new data sources, advanced technologies, and real-time decisioning solutions.

Experience you will need to have:

  • 10 years of experience in data science, predictive modeling, fraud and risk analytics, or related quantitative disciplines, including experience leading teams and delivering analytics solutions that drive business outcomes.

  • Demonstrated expertise in AI/ML, advanced analytics, and decision optimization, with a proven ability to translate complex data into actionable insights, risk controls, and growth opportunities.

  • Strong knowledge of payment, merchant, lending, fraud, fintech, financial services or credit risk ecosystems, including the use of merchant and transaction data to support risk management and portfolio growth strategies.

  • Proficiency with analytical and data technologies, including Python, Snowflake, and modern data platforms, with the ability to guide teams in the development, deployment, and monitoring of analytical solutions.

Experience that would be great to have:
  • Master's degree or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or another quantitative discipline.

  • Deep expertise in AI/ML techniques and advanced statistical modeling, including experience applying predictive analytics to business and risk management challenges.
  • Experience leveraging credit bureau, alternative, and third-party data sources to enhance risk assessments, predictive models, and automated decision strategies.

How you will work:
This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experience helps you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
Sponsorship:
