What is a creative startup?

A Creative Startup is a new business venture focused on innovative ideas in creative industries such as design, media, technology, fashion, art, or entertainment. These startups combine creativity and entrepreneurship to develop unique products, services, or experiences that stand out in the market. Their goal is often to disrupt traditional industries or introduce entirely new concepts, leveraging creativity as a core competitive advantage. Creative Startups typically thrive in dynamic environments and may use technology to scale their impact and reach wider audiences.

What are some common challenges faced when working in a creative startup environment?

Working in a creative startup often means embracing a fast-paced, dynamic atmosphere where roles and responsibilities can shift rapidly as the company grows. Team members may face challenges such as managing tight deadlines, adapting to frequent changes in project direction, and balancing creativity with the need to deliver tangible results. However, these challenges are often offset by a collaborative culture, opportunities to contribute ideas, and the potential for rapid career growth as the startup scales. It's important to be flexible, proactive, and open to wearing multiple hats while thriving in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative startup founder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Startup Founder, you need a blend of entrepreneurial mindset, creative problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of business fundamentals, often supported by experience or education in entrepreneurship or design. Familiarity with digital design tools, project management software, and startup accelerators is highly valuable. Excellent communication, resilience, and leadership are crucial soft skills for inspiring teams and networking with stakeholders. These competencies are important because they drive innovation, enable efficient business operations, and help navigate the challenges of launching and scaling a creative venture.

What is the difference between Creative Startup vs Graphic Designer?

AspectCreative StartupGraphic Designer
Required CredentialsPortfolio, relevant design skills, sometimes a degree in design or related fieldPortfolio, design software proficiency, degree or certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentFast-paced, innovative, often small teams or freelance settingsDesign studios, agencies, corporate in-house teams, freelance
Employer & Industry UsageStartups, creative agencies, entrepreneurial venturesAdvertising, marketing, media, corporate branding

While both roles involve creative skills, a Creative Startup typically refers to working within or founding a new business focused on innovation and branding, often in a flexible environment. A Graphic Designer specializes in visual communication, working on specific design projects across various industries. The main difference lies in scope: Creative Startup roles often encompass broader responsibilities including branding, marketing, and business development, whereas Graphic Designers focus primarily on visual design tasks.

Job description

Director of Performance Creative – Happy Head – Los Angeles

About Happy Head

Happy Head is the global leader in dermatologist-prescribed hair medicine. As the leading telemedicine platform focused exclusively on hair growth, we provide powerful, personalized medical treatment. Our medicines are prescribed and patients are cared for only by board-certified dermatologists, the only medical profession with hair and scalp training.

About the Role

Happy Head is looking for a Director of Performance Creative to own the performance creative engine across paid channels. This is a player-coach role where you'll set the direction, get hands-on with concept and design when needed, and manage designers and agencies to move faster and ship more winning creative.

You'll work across both traditional and AI-powered creative production: photo-real life shoots, directing UGC content, directing our founders in founder-centric ads, and mastering AI tools (Higgsfield.ai, NanoBanana, Midjourney) for still and video assets.

You'll own performance creative end-to-end—from interpreting ad account signals to crafting the hook/proof/offer, to ensuring traffic lands on optimized experiences and drives funnel performance. Production may be distributed, but creative strategy, standards, and final direction live with you.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Ownership

  • Own performance creative strategy across Meta/Instagram, YouTube, Search, Email/Lifecycle Marketing, Amazon, TikTok, Snap, Pinterest, and emerging channels
  • Build simple, repeatable frameworks by channel and funnel stage (hooks, angles, proof, offers, CTA logic, pacing)
  • Maintain a clear testing roadmap: what we're testing, why, what "good" looks like, and rotation plans to prevent creative fatigue
  • Review performance weekly with Paid, Product, and Creative teams; translate results into actionable next steps

Hands-On Execution

  • Get hands-on when needed: concepting and designing to unlock new ideas fast and raise execution standards
  • Direct photo shoots with actors, products, and photographers
  • Direct UGC creators and founders in on-camera content
  • Leverage AI tools for rapid iteration of video and still creative assets
  • Coach designers through critique, clear standards, and day-to-day feedback

Funnel Alignment

  • Ensure ads and landing experiences are aligned (LP/PDP/advertorial/quiz)
  • Maintain consistency across products with documented learnings for reuse

What Success Looks Like

  • More winners, faster learning, fewer "random" one-offs
  • Higher creative output without quality dropping, with rotation plans that keep ads fresh
  • Strong ad → destination → funnel consistency across products
  • Learnings captured, documented, and reused systematically

Qualifications Required

  • 5+ years in performance/growth creative (DTC/subscription preferred)
  • 2+ years managing and developing junior designers
  • Based in LA, or willing to relocate within 60 days of start date
  • Proven track record building performance creative systems (frameworks, roadmaps, review loops, documentation) that moved business metrics
  • Deep Meta/Facebook advertising experience with ability to translate learnings across channels
  • Passion, not disdain, for Direct Marketing
  • Strong direct-response instincts: messaging hierarchy, proof points, offer framing, clear CTAs
  • Proficiency with traditional creative production (Photoshop, managing photo/video shoots, directing talent)
  • Proficiency with AI creative tools (Midjourney, Higgsfield.ai, or similar)
  • Comfortable working in the weeds while coaching and developing team members
  • Strong collaboration skills with Paid Media, Product, CRO/UX, and leadership teams

Preferred

  • Experience with before/after campaigns in aesthetics or beauty
  • Beauty industry experience
  • Experience marketing to affluent male customer base
  • Video sales letter (VSL) experience
