Job description

Are you a strategic and creative Indirect Tax professional who likes solving complex state and local indirect tax issues within sales & use and excise tax? We are looking for a sharp Tax Consultants to join our Indirect Tax team who is ready to take on new challenges and join one of the largest multistate tax practices in the United States.

Work you'll do 

As a Tax Consultant, Core Tax on the Transaction Tax team, you will be responsible for: 

  • Researching state and local indirect tax legislation and assisting with drafting client responses, memoranda, and other client-facing materials 
  • Supporting state and local indirect tax consulting projects, including sales and use tax and excise tax overpayment reviews, transaction tax analysis, audit defense, nexus planning, and voluntary disclosures 
  • Assisting with engagement workflow management, supervising tax consultants and interns on assigned engagements, and coordinating with Deloitte's in-house tax preparation team and client tax departments 
  • Assisting with preparation of client billings, account reconciliations, and proposals for new and existing clients 
  • Performing technical review of state and local indirect tax returns on select engagements and identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and workflow

The team 

Deloitte's Indirect Tax group is the largest State and Local Tax (SALT) practice in the United States with more than 1,000 professionals nationwide. Our Transaction Tax professionals include former state tax auditors and administrators, industry personnel, tax practitioners, accounting specialists, and technology personnel with numerous years of multistate tax experience. Collectively, our team has significant experience with the requirements and nuances of jurisdictions in all 50 states. Our specific services include state income and franchise tax, indirect tax, business restructuring, credits and incentives, sales and use tax outsourcing, excise tax, property tax, state strategic tax review, and state tax controversy. 

Qualifications 

Required: 

  • Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation 
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 
  • Eligibility to sit for the bar exam before beginning full-time employment 
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities in a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2-3 days per week 
  • Ability to travel 50%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve. 
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available. 
  • Ability to start in Summer 2026 
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of employment. 

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or business 
  • Prior internship, summer associate, or other work experience in tax, accounting, or legal services 

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $78,000 to $140,000.
