Job description

Mission of the Role (What you will be doing) 

The Yard Truck Driver is responsible for safely moving semi-trailers throughout the facility yard to support dock operations, shipping, receiving, and overall warehouse efficiency. This position plays a critical role in keeping freight moving on time and ensuring trailers are properly staged for loading and unloading operations. 

Key Duties & Accountabilities (Primary responsibilities & quantifiable measurements) 

  • Safely operate a yard tractor (hostler/spotter truck) to move trailers throughout the facility yard 

  • Stage trailers at assigned dock doors per dispatcher or dock manager instructions 

  • Inspect trailers for damage, cleanliness, and proper sealing before and after movement 

  • Maintain accurate records of trailer positions and movements using yard management systems or manual logs 

  • Coordinate with dock associates, dispatchers, and drivers to ensure timely trailer placement 

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard equipment in accordance with DOT regulations 

  • Report equipment defects, unsafe conditions, or damaged trailers to supervisors immediately 

  • Assist with shipping and receiving activities as directed 

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard environment 

  • Comply with all company safety policies, DOT regulations, and OSHA standards 

  • Communicate effectively via radio or phone with dock and dispatch teams s

Educational/Training Requirements/Experience (What your background should look like) 

  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required 

  • Minimum 2 years of verifiable driving experience in yard driving, over-the-road, or local delivery 

  • Clean Motor Vehicle Record with no major violations in the past 3 years 

  • Must be able to pass DOT pre-employment drug screen and background check 

  • Experience operating yard trucks/hostlers and standard yard equipment preferred 

Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Ability Requirements  

  • Familiarity with DOT Hours of Service (HOS) regulations 

  • Solid understanding of proper trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures 

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety 

  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with dock and dispatch teams 

  • Familiarity with yard management systems (YMS) or warehouse management systems (WMS) is a plus

The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors such as work location, job-related skills, qualifications, experience, responsibilities, and relevant education and training.
