What is a creative designer?

A Creative Designer is a professional responsible for developing visual concepts and designs for various media, such as advertisements, branding, websites, and product packaging. They use their artistic skills and knowledge of design software to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. Creative Designers often work with marketing teams, clients, or art directors to create visually appealing content that aligns with a brand's identity. Their role may involve brainstorming, sketching, creating digital assets, and ensuring that all visuals meet project objectives. They play a key role in shaping the visual aspects of a company's communications.

What is a creative designer?

A creative designer, also known as a graphic designer, is involved with advertising and marketing. Some creative designers are employed directly by an organization while others work for an advertising agency. Another option is to work as a self-employed freelance creative designer. Your main job duties involve creating advertising materials for a company. As a creative designer, you create a rough layout for design projects and follow them through to completion. You use digital illustration software to create the finished products. It is often essential to collaborate with other designers as well as writers, marketers, advertisers, and vendors on the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, proficiency in visual storytelling, and typically a degree in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital design platforms are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help set standout designers apart in collaborative environments. These skills ensure the creation of visually impactful, brand-consistent work that meets client needs and drives project success.

How does a creative designer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Creative Designers frequently work closely with marketing, product, and development teams to ensure visual concepts align with overall business goals. They participate in brainstorming sessions, gather input from stakeholders, and adjust designs based on feedback from cross-functional colleagues. This collaborative process helps ensure that creative outputs not only look appealing but also support strategic objectives, meet technical requirements, and resonate with the target audience. Maintaining open communication and adaptability is key for success in these collaborative environments.

How much does a creative designer get paid?

The average salary for a creative designer varies by experience and location but typically ranges from $45,000 to $85,000 annually. Entry-level designers may earn less, while experienced professionals with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with advanced proficiency in design tools like Adobe Creative Suite.

What qualifications do you need to be a creative designer?

A creative designer typically needs a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual arts, or a related field. Strong skills in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, a good portfolio, and creativity are essential; some roles may also require experience or certifications in specific tools or techniques.

Job description

About the Role: The Multimedia Designer brings BBB's mission to life visually, translating our voice into compelling, on-brand design across every channel we use to reach the public. This role blends hands-on production with creative problem-solving, partnering closely with the Marketing-Communications and Advertising teams to produce work that is thoughtful, consistent and built to earn attention.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Creative Design & Content Development:

  • Develop original visual concepts and creative approaches for marketing, communications, advertising, public outreach, and community engagement materials, exercising independent artistic judgment regarding layout, typography, color, imagery, visual hierarchy, pacing, format and overall design execution.
  • Develop high-quality presentations, event collateral, signage, infographics, maps, and other branded materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Create infographics, illustrations, and visual storytelling assets that support advocacy and community outreach efforts.
  • Produce and edit motion graphics and short-form video content, and organize multimedia assets for ongoing use.
  • Serve as the primary creative designer for assigned projects, making design recommendations and creative decisions from concept through final production, subject to brand standards and ordinary review/approval processes.
  • Execute complex design projects independently, from creative brief through final production.

Brand & Digital Stewardship:

  • Ensure every design aligns with BBB's brand guidelines and maintains a consistent visual identity across all platforms.
  • Independently translate broad creative briefs, campaign objectives, and organizational messaging into finished visual designs and multimedia assets that require invention, imagination, originality, and talent in the graphic arts.
  • Maintain and evolve presentation templates, branded communication materials, and the broader creative asset library.
  • Manage website content and multimedia assets to support effective communication and continuous improvement.
  • Stay current on design trends, tools, and technologies — including AI-assisted design tools — to keep BBB's visual content fresh and effective.

Collaboration & Project Management:

  • Partner with the Marketing-Communications and Advertising teams to create cohesive, high-impact campaigns, balancing priorities across both areas.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously by setting priorities, coordinating timelines through a project management platform, and maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors, printers, photographers, and production partners to produce materials as needed.
  • Review proofs and manage quality control from concept through final production.
  • Provide creative support for events, community outreach, and special projects, and take on additional assignments as needed to support the team.

The statements contained herein reflect the principal function and most significant duties of the job but should not be considered to be an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned including work in other areas to cover absences or relief to equalize peak work periods or otherwise balance the workload.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven experience as a graphic designer with a strong, diverse portfolio.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) and PowerPoint.
  • Strong grasp of design principles: typography, color theory, layout and visual hierarchy.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • A critical and analytical thinker who can problem-solve independently and in a team setting.
  • Superior organizational skills and the ability to multitask under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Working familiarity with AI-assisted design tools (e.g., Adobe Firefly, Midjourney) to speed up concepting and production.
  • Experience with Figma or similar collaborative design and prototyping tools.
  • Basic web design and UX literacy — responsive layout, accessibility standards, andcomfort in a content management system.
  • Motion design and short-form video editing for social platforms (Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts).
  • Data visualization skills for turning complex information into clear, accessible infographics.

Competencies:

  • Ethics and Values, with demonstrated actions that consistently demonstrate actions and choices based on ethics and values.
  • Customer Focus to meet internal & external customer needs and continuously improve customer offerings.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration to support team unity and ensure shared success.
  • Resilience to turn setbacks into comebacks.
  • Technology and Computer Skills to work efficiently and productively.

At BBB, we embrace diversity and strive to create an inclusive environment that provides all team members the opportunity to thrive. We foster a culture in which our differences are celebrated; our differences are what make us a Better Business! We are proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and will not discriminate based on race, color, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital status, disability status, citizenship status, veteran status, or any other characteristic prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
