As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for crash data analyst in the United States is $82,640.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $62,500.00 and $97,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Crash Data Analyst typically collaborate with law enforcement and insurance professionals during an investigation?

Crash Data Analysts often work closely with law enforcement officers and insurance professionals to interpret data from vehicle event data recorders and reconstruct accident scenarios. They provide detailed reports and visualizations that help clarify the sequence of events leading up to a crash. Effective communication skills are essential, as analysts must explain technical findings in a clear, accessible manner and may be called upon to present their conclusions in meetings or legal proceedings. Timely collaboration ensures that investigations are thorough and that all parties have the information needed to make informed decisions.

What is the difference between Crash Data Analyst vs Traffic Data Analyst?

AspectCrash Data AnalystTraffic Data Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Data Analysis, Transportation, or related field; certifications like CPC or DATBachelor's in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or Data Analysis; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentGovernment agencies, transportation departments, research firmsMunicipalities, transportation agencies, consulting firms
Industry UsageFocuses on analyzing vehicle crash data to improve safetyFocuses on overall traffic flow and congestion patterns

Crash Data Analysts primarily analyze vehicle crash data to enhance road safety, while Traffic Data Analysts focus on broader traffic flow and congestion issues. Both roles require similar skills and work environments, often within transportation agencies or consulting firms. Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right position based on their interests and expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Crash Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crash Data Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, statistical knowledge, and a background in data analysis, often supported by a degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with crash data analysis software (such as PC-Crash or HVE), database management systems, and data visualization tools is typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are important soft skills for interpreting complex data and presenting clear findings. These skills and qualities are essential for accurately reconstructing incidents, identifying safety trends, and informing policy or engineering decisions.

What are crash data analysts?

Crash data analysts are professionals who collect, process, and interpret data related to vehicle accidents. They analyze information from crash reports, vehicle telematics, and sometimes event data recorders (black boxes) to determine causes and contributing factors of road accidents. Their work helps improve road safety, inform policy decisions, and support legal or insurance investigations. Crash data analysts often collaborate with law enforcement, transportation agencies, and safety organizations.

Focuses on designing, analyzing, and optimizing crashworthiness structures to enhance vehicle safety performance.
Responsibilities include simulating structural behavior in various crash scenarios, developing lead structures, defining sections, and ensuring compliance with safety standards throughout the entire program from concept to launch.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and define structural sections for lead structures and load paths to withstand front, side, rear, and roof crash modes.
Conduct crashworthiness simulations using LS-DYNA to predict structural integrity and impact protection.
Create load path designs for high-speed and low-speed crash scenarios, balancing structural demands and optimizing energy absorption.
Apply material characterization to integrate complex material behavior and failure modes into simulation models.
Include characterized data in LS-DYNA to accurately simulate complex failure patterns under various crash conditions.
Develop and analyze 1D math models for quick solutions and initial design evaluations.
Ensure compliance with IIHS, USNCAP standards in all structural and crash scenario developments.
Participate in full program cycles from initial concept development to product launch, contributing to safety development and crash optimization.
Analyze crash scenarios to evaluate energy absorption, structural integrity, and vehicle behavior under different impacts.
Document simulation results and provide recommendations for optimizing crash structures.
Additional Requirements:
Proficiency in tools, particularly LS-DYNA and ANSA
Extensive experience in material characterization and integration into crash simulation tools.
Familiarity with automotive safety standards (FMVSS, ECE, NCAP)
Strong understanding of high-strength materials, structural balance for different speed conditions, and IHS, USNCAP crash scenarios.
