Job Summary:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to advancing research activities in transportation engineering, with emphasis on traffic safety, road user behavior, traffic operations, and intelligent transportation systems. The position will support the development of competitive research proposals to secure state and federal funding, lead the preparation of high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to dissemination of research findings at national conferences. The appointee will also assist in supervising graduate students, provide technical guidance on data-driven and AI-based safety analyses, and support ongoing research projects aligned with the Center's objectives. The position is designed to strengthen the group's research productivity, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and expand externally funded research in transportation safety and operations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Research Development & Execution: Design and conduct research in transportation engineering with focus on traffic safety, road user behavior, traffic operations, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). 25%
  • Proposal Development: Lead and contribute to competitive research proposals for state and federal funding (USDOT, FHWA, NSF, NCHRP, LTRC, etc.). 25%
  • Data Analysis & Modeling: Perform advanced statistical analysis, safety modeling (e.g., crash modeling, CMFs), AI/ML applications, simulation, and large-scale data processing. 15%
  • Scholarly Publications: Lead preparation and submission of peer-reviewed journal manuscripts; contribute to TRB papers and conference presentations.15%
  • Graduate Student Mentorship: Support faculty in supervising MS and PhD students; provide guidance on methodology, analysis, and academic writing. 8%
  • Project Management Support: Assist with project coordination, milestone tracking, progress reporting, and sponsor deliverables. 5%

  • Terminal Degree: PhD in Transportation Engineering
  • Specific Experience: Proven research experience in transportation safety and traffic operations, crash data analytics, advanced statistical and econometric modeling, GIS-based spatial analysis, competitive research proposal development, peer-reviewed scholarly publication, and active support of graduate student research and mentoring. Over 3-5 years of experience in transportation engineering.
  • Preferred Certifications/Licenses: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification.

Physical Demands:

  • Bending, Crawling Twisting, Push/Pulling, Climbing, Squatting, Lifting under and over 50 lbs. will be occasionally up to 33% of the time.
