What Does a Craps Dealer Do?

As a craps dealer, your job is to help operate a craps table at a casino and encourage people to gamble on the results of the game. In standard games, craps dealers work in teams of four under the supervision of a senior employee known as the boxman. You rotate positions every 20 minutes, with two dealers acting as dealers, one acting as stickman, and the fourth on break. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a craps dealer requires intimate knowledge of the game, the ability to engage in conversation with gamblers, and sometimes explaining the rules of the game to new players.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Craps Dealer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Craps Dealer, you need strong math skills, manual dexterity, detailed knowledge of casino rules, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with casino gaming systems, surveillance protocols, and sometimes certification from a dealer school are important technical requirements. Outstanding communication, customer service, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help create a positive gaming environment and handle disputes. These skills ensure efficient, fair gameplay and enhance the guest experience, which is crucial for casino reputation and business success.

What are the typical challenges a Craps Dealer faces during busy casino hours?

Craps Dealers often encounter fast-paced and high-pressure situations during peak casino hours, as the game attracts large, enthusiastic crowds. Maintaining accuracy in chip handling, payouts, and game procedures while engaging with players can be challenging, especially with the loud environment and multiple bets happening simultaneously. Dealers must stay focused, enforce rules diplomatically, and provide excellent customer service to ensure a positive gaming experience for all participants.
