What is a CPG food broker?

CPG food brokers are intermediaries who represent consumer packaged goods (CPG) food manufacturers to retailers, wholesalers, and distributors. Their primary job is to help food brands get their products into stores, negotiate shelf placement, and increase sales. Food brokers use their industry relationships and market knowledge to connect manufacturers with the right buyers, manage product promotions, and provide valuable feedback about market trends. They typically work on commission and are especially useful for new or small brands seeking to expand their presence in grocery stores and supermarkets.

How do CPG food brokers typically collaborate with manufacturers and retailers to ensure product success on store shelves?

CPG Food Brokers act as intermediaries between food manufacturers and retail outlets, working closely with both parties to facilitate product placement, promotions, and sales strategies. They regularly communicate with manufacturers to understand product features and marketing goals, while also building strong relationships with retail buyers to negotiate shelf space and plan in-store promotions. This collaboration requires brokers to be proactive, organized, and skilled at managing multiple accounts, ensuring that products gain visibility and meet sales targets. Effective brokers often visit stores, analyze sales data, and provide feedback to manufacturers to continuously improve product performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPG food broker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPG Food Broker, you need strong sales acumen, knowledge of the consumer packaged goods industry, and typically a background in business, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and retail management systems is commonly required. Outstanding negotiation, relationship-building, and communication skills help you stand out in this client-focused role. These abilities are crucial for effectively representing brands, securing shelf space, and driving sales growth in a competitive market.
