Lead Surgical Technologists are integral members of the perioperative team who work under the supervision, direction, and license of the surgeon and with nurses and other multidisciplinary healthcare team members. They report to the Operating Room Nurse Manager. Lead Surgical Technologists provide care for an array of surgical patients and serve as expert resources in their service line and field. Major functions include, but are not limited to, preparation of the operating room suite, gathering necessary surgical instrumentation and supplies, collaborating with the Central Processing Department, Materials Management, Clinical Support, Education, and Management. Responsible for managing and coordinating the equipment used by the surgical team during surgical procedures.


Qualifications

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparing the operating room for surgery

    • Setting up surgical instrumentation, supplies, and equipment, maintaining sterile conditions, monitoring equipment and instrumentation during the surgery, communicating changes and concerns, escalating as needed

    • Facilitates on-time OR starts and turnovers with the assistance of, but not limited to, pod resource staff

  • Coordinate and provide coverage for breaks and lunches with the assistance of pod resource staff when operationally necessary

  • Serve as scrub staff in operating room as operationally necessary in order to maintain normal operations

  • Oversee case cart accuracy with the assistance of, but not limited to, pod resource staff

  • Review cases for minimum of next day to confirm accuracy and ensure preparedness

  • Attend daily huddles with CPD/Vendors/Reps to discuss cases for next day, including arrival of loaner trays

  • Collaborate with surgeons, nurses in charge, managers, and staff to update surgeon preference cards, regularly

  • Participate in CPD initiatives to change and refine workflow

  • Collaborate with CPD, Materials Management, and clinical support to maintain normal operations. Includes but is not limited to, coordination of sterilization process for surgical equipment and instruments, regularly inspecting instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure they are clean, functional, and in good working condition.

  • Collaborate with CPD leadership in order to maintain an accurate inventory of surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies, and maintain accurate documentation and records related to such.

  • Collaborate with education and management team to provide training and education to surgical technologists on the proper use, care, and handling of surgical equipment.

  • Coordination of Instrument Kit Optimization in collaboration with CPD

  • Assist the surgeon within scope of practice and at the direction and under the supervision of the surgeon

  • Serve as a resource for surgical technologists regarding equipment operation, troubleshooting, and problem solving.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent, required

  • Licenses/Certifications

    • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required

  • Experience Details:

    • 3 - 5 years experience as a surgical technologist, required

    • Relevant Cardiac/Vascular experience required
