What is a counterpoint in music?

Counterpoint in music refers to the technique of combining two or more independent melodic lines to create a harmonious texture. Each line, or 'voice,' maintains its own identity while interacting with the others, resulting in a complex and interesting musical composition. Counterpoint is a foundational concept in Western classical music, especially prominent in the works of composers like J.S. Bach. It requires a deep understanding of harmony, rhythm, and voice leading. Learning counterpoint helps musicians develop compositional skills and a better appreciation for polyphonic music.
