What is the role of a cosmetic manager?

A cosmetic manager oversees the day-to-day operations of a cosmetics department or store, often within a mall or department store. Your responsibilities as a cosmetic manager are to maintain the staff schedule, supervise employees, manage inventory, and ensure that customers are satisfied. Your duties also include overseeing the sales of the store, tracking profits, and working the products or sales counter when necessary. You set store-wide goals and ensure your staff is meeting them. Additionally, you hire and train staff and monitor their performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cosmetic manager?

To thrive as a Cosmetic Manager, you need expertise in beauty products, sales strategies, inventory management, and often a background in retail or cosmetology. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking software, and brand-specific training or certifications is highly valuable. Exceptional interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to motivate teams are crucial for building customer loyalty and driving sales. These skills ensure effective operations, excellent customer experiences, and achievement of sales targets in a competitive retail environment.

What are some common challenges a cosmetic manager faces when leading a team in a retail setting?

One common challenge for Cosmetic Managers in retail is maintaining high team morale and motivation, especially during busy sales periods or when targets are challenging to meet. Managers must balance coaching team members, handling customer service issues, and ensuring product displays are appealing and well-stocked. Additionally, staying current with the latest beauty trends and product knowledge is essential to effectively train staff and meet customer expectations. Successful Cosmetic Managers excel at communication, adaptability, and fostering a collaborative atmosphere to overcome these obstacles.

This position works Monday through Friday from our workshop in Canmore, Alberta.

What you'll be doing

  • Drive a culture of quality by establishing systems that ensure product safety, consistency, and regulatory compliance across manufacturing operations
  • Develop, implement, and monitor quality policies, procedures, and key performance indicators
Change Control
  • Establish and maintain a formal change control process for materials, formulas, specifications, packaging, equipment, processes, and quality systems
  • Assess quality and regulatory impacts of proposed changes and ensure appropriate validation, documentation, and approvals prior to implementation
Supplier Quality
  • Establish quality requirements and specifications for raw materials, packaging, and external suppliers.
  • Partner with Procurement and Research & Development (R&D) to qualify and monitor suppliers based on quality and risk
Quality Testing for Safety
  • Define and manage overall QC testing framework and protocols with ongoing monitoring based on risk assessment methodology
  • Ensure QC testing processes, approvals and records for all formulas, raw materials, and packaging are maintained and accurate
  • Ensure testing is within budget, accurate and on time
Complaint and Adverse Reactions Leadership
  • Lead the overall investigation, documentation, and resolution of customer complaints related to product quality, safety, and regulatory concerns
  • Ensure complaint investigations are completed thoroughly, identify root causes, implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs), and communicate outcomes to stakeholders
  • Monitor complaint and adverse reaction trends to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and risk mitigation
Cleaning and Sanitation Leadership
  • Develop and support implementation and continuous improvement of cleaning and sanitation programs that meet regulatory and company standards
  • Lead sanitation validation, verification, inspections, and audits, addressing deficiencies through corrective actions
  • Provide coaching and training to team members on cleaning, sanitation, and hygiene best practices
  • Monitor sanitation performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce quality and safety risks
Regulatory Leadership
  • Monitor, interpret, and ensure compliance with Canadian and US cosmetic regulations
  • Review and approve product labels, packaging, and promotional materials to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including ingredient listings, warnings, claims, and cosmetic allergen labeling
  • Assess the safety, efficacy, and regulatory status of cosmetic ingredients to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
Team Leadership
  • Build, develop, and lead a high-performing Quality team with clear accountability, performance expectations, technical development, and continuous improvement objectives
  • Foster a culture where quality, product safety, and customer trust are foundational to every decision
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, standards, and performance expectations within the Quality function
  • Develop technical capability and succession within the Quality team

Does this sound like you?

  • Accredited Educational background in Science (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharma, Biology), or another quality related field
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in Quality Assurance and/or Quality Control within a regulated manufacturing environment, preferably within cosmetics, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, food, natural health products, or other GMP-regulated industries
