What Do Salon Managers Do?

As a salon manager, your duties are to oversee the daily operations of a salon, such as hiring and scheduling staff, meeting with customers, and reviewing financial statements. Your specific responsibilities may vary depending on the type of beauty salon you work in. Although you may have trained to be a stylist or other type of beautician, your duties deal more with the management of the location. However, on occasion, you may perform regular service to customers, such as hair trimming and coloring. Some salon managers are also the owner of the business, while others report to the owner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Salon Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Salon Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, organizational skills, and experience in cosmetology or salon operations, often supported by a cosmetology license or managerial training. Familiarity with salon management software, appointment scheduling systems, and basic accounting tools is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, and customer service make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure smooth daily operations, satisfied clients, and a motivated salon team, all of which drive business success.

What are some common challenges Salon Managers face when overseeing both staff performance and client satisfaction?

Salon Managers often juggle the dual responsibility of motivating their team while ensuring an exceptional client experience. Common challenges include managing staff schedules to accommodate peak times, handling interpersonal conflicts among team members, and addressing client concerns promptly to maintain a positive reputation. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing client demands are vital. Building a supportive team culture and implementing regular training sessions can help overcome these hurdles and foster both staff loyalty and client satisfaction.

What does a Salon Manager do?

A Salon Manager oversees the daily operations of a beauty salon, ensuring that the business runs smoothly and efficiently. Their responsibilities typically include managing staff, scheduling appointments, handling customer service issues, managing inventory and supplies, and overseeing financial tasks such as budgeting and sales tracking. Salon Managers also ensure the salon complies with health and safety regulations and often play a key role in marketing and promoting the salon's services. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential for this role.

If you're a people-centered retail manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment, knows how to motivate a team, and loves creating memorable guest experiences, Mango Salon is ready for you.
Why This Role Will Excite You
At Mango Salon, a Salon Manager is more than an operations leader-you're the heartbeat of the guest experience and the coach behind a high-performing team. You'll have the autonomy to lead, the support to grow, and the opportunity to make a real impact every single day.

What You'll Do
Lead the Floor & the Team
  • Deliver exceptional, personalized service to every guest
  • Create a welcoming, high-energy environment for guests and team members
  • Coordinate the service floor to keep the day running smoothly
Coach, Develop & Inspire

  • Build strong relationships with Designers, Guest Services, and Assistants
  • Reinforce Mango's culture, values, and initiatives
Manage the Business
  • Oversee scheduling and staff coverage in partnership with the Scheduling Manager
  • Maintain strong knowledge of salon services, systems, and operations
  • Support the Welcome Desk and Reservation Center as needed
  • Problem-solve in real time and keep priorities moving forward

What We're Looking For
  • People management experience required (retail leadership experience strongly valued)
  • Salon or service-industry experience is a plus-but not required
  • A natural relationship builder who enjoys coaching and motivating others
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • A positive, professional leader who thrives in a fast-moving environment
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and across multiple locations
  • A desire to grow your career with a company that promotes from within

  • 2023 Salon Today Top 200 for Compensation & Benefits
  • Richmond Times-Dispatch Top Workplaces Award (2022-2026)
  • Readers' Choice Awards from Virginia Living and Richmond Magazine

Why You'll Love Working at Mango

Benefits include:
  • Supportive, team-driven culture
  • Clear career pathing and leadership development
  • Competitive pay
  • Profit Sharing Retirement Plan
