Job description

Position Summary
The Distribution Lineman is any position from Groundman through Journeyman. Placement is based on skill level which is assessed by an indoor and outdoor interview. If selected, the hiring manager will determine placement within CoServ's Lineman Employee Development Program.
Work is frequently performed on and near energized conductors and equipment at heights up to 100ft, requiring skill and safe work practices and procedures.
Primary Position Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, and operates the electric distribution system.
  • Operates utility vehicles, including bucket trucks, digger trucks, boom trucks, and other specialized equipment and machinery used in the electric industry.
  • Installs, maintains, and removes wood poles including setting, framing, and installing hardware, guys, and other related materials.
  • Installs, maintains, removes and operates transformers, capacitors, switches, conductors, and other similar equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and removes underground conductors, conduits, vaults, transformers, elbows, terminators, splices including secondary conductors and connections.
  • Will be in the on-call rotation.
  • Attends safety, classroom and field training provided by CoServ.
  • Maintains vehicles and tools as assigned.
  • Wears and applies appropriate PPE and other safety equipment as necessary.
  • Follows OSHA, NESC, CoServ specifications, safety procedures, and all federal, state and local standards.
  • Provides and updates GIS with the necessary field data to keep system maps current.
  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
  • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.

Secondary Position Responsibilities
  • Completes the necessary documentation regarding construction and maintenance projects.
  • Maintains daily timesheet.
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must maintain pole top, bucket and vault rescue certifications.
  • Attends CoServ University and industry training as required.
  • Reports hazards, injuries, illnesses, property damage and near misses to their supervisor.
  • Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings.
  • Performs other duties and activities as directed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Required for linemen with 4 years of experience.
  • Leadman on-call or as directed by supervisor.
  • Is expected to take a leadership role in training the apprentice linemen.

Position Requirements
Education and Certifications Required
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalency.

Education and Certifications Preferred
  • Class A CDL
  • OSHA 30
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Hurt Man Rescue
  • Journeyman

Experience Preferred
  • Journeyman Lineman

Skills and Abilities Required
  • Understand and follow CoServ maps, CoServ safety manual, work orders, staking sheets, and any type of CoServ forms related to work being performed.
  • Learn CoServ's service area and distribution system.
  • Skills to utilize Microsoft Office and IBM Maximo.
  • Strong analytical, numerical, and reasoning abilities.
  • Learn CoServ's tariff policies that apply to lineman duties.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency and job knowledge to advance to the next level in job progression through competency assessment and/or performance evaluation through the task manual and recommendation of the supervisor.
  • Pass pole climbing school.

  • Journeyman Lineman

Physical Requirements
  • Works outdoors 95% of the time in all types of weather conditions and environmental conditions such as fallen branches, rough terrain, heavy underbrush, etc.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Drives company vehicle.
  • Works extended hours as needed or directed.
  • Works at heights up to 100 feet above ground.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with team members at all worksite locations.
  • Works in low light conditions - using handheld lantern or spotlights.
  • Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings.
  • Climbs poles with a belt and tools weighing 40-50 pounds.
  • Performs call out duties.
  • Works in underground confined spaces.
  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, copier, etc.

Other Requirements
  • Must reside within the CoServ operations residential boundary.
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid Texas Class A commercial driver's license with a tanker endorsement.
