The Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services is recruiting for a Corrections Nurse 1/2 at Anchorage Correctional Center (ACC) in Anchorage, Alaska.

• Triage and assess patients
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments
• Maintain patient medical records
• Observe, document, and report changes in the physical and mental conditions of the inmates

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Corrections Nurses working at ACC-East can expect a patient population of about 400 individuals. Nurses will need to become fluent in our policies, procedures, and protocols, have a deep understanding of their scope of practice, and be comfortable practicing in a highly autonomous setting.

Corrections Nurse 1

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.

Corrections Nurse 2

Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska; AND EITHER Successful completion of a formal training plan as a Corrections Nurse I with the State of Alaska; OR One year of entry level experience as a Registered Nurse. Examples of this experience include but are not exclusively limited to prior service as a Corrections Nurse I, Psychiatric Nurse I, or Nurse I with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med-Surg, Psychiatric, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case-by-case basis.

Special Note:

Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska and requisite qualifying experience, may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty. Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment. Some positions may require the successful applicant to provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire. Employees are required to be tested annually. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.

Professional Licenses: Alaska Registered Nursing License or within 30 days of graduation from nursing program.

Recruitment Difficulties:

Starting salary may be approved up to Step D - $56.93, if criteria are met.

The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:

• Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;
• Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or
• Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.

Criminal History Checks/APSIN/ACOMS:

Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
