Job Description Summary
This is a student teaching assistant position for currently enrolled students at the University of La Verne. Lab TA's will assist the instructor in the proper functioning of the lab during the session and help students follow proper techniques and safety rules while conducting experiments. TA's must be proactive in the lab and model proper laboratory safety at all times, including wearing the proper protective equipment: lab coats, goggles and proper clothing and shoes. This position may be extended to the Spring 2027 semester after evaluation by the lab coordinator on performance in the lab.
Specific Duties
Teaching assistants will:
- Come prepared and on time or earlier to their respective lab with proper PPE and with knowledge of the experiment and ready to answer student's questions.
- Must attend the weekly lab meetings.
- TA must remain proactive in labs and observe/keep an eye on students to ensure that they are following proper laboratory techniques and safety. They must remain vigilant at all times and keep an eye on the student's use of the chemicals during the experiments to prevent or catch cross contamination.
- TAs must communicate with the Lab instructors / Lab Coordinators / Lab Managers regarding any concerns with the chemicals or lab safety.
- Ensure the maintenance of the lab's cleanliness during their respective lab and conduct lab clean up (putting away equipment or cleaning glassware, keep chemicals in order, etc.), and sometimes help set up (prepare waste containers or pipettes, help with preparation of chemicals, etc.)
- Grade assignments within a reasonable turnaround time
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of CHEM 201/202, respective of the section you want to TA for, with a grade of B- or better.
- Mandatory attendance at the weekly lab meetings.
- Committed to working both Fall and Spring semesters for a minimum of 10 hours/week.
- Must be a current University of La Verne student

- Recommendation from a Chemistry instructor

- Basic knowledge of Excel

Benefits Summary
Employees are eligible for the following benefits:
One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.
University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan - can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.
In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.
