What is a copy chief?

Copy Chiefs are senior editors responsible for overseeing the quality, consistency, and accuracy of written content within a publication, advertising agency, or marketing team. They manage and mentor copywriters and editors, review drafts, enforce style guidelines, and ensure that all content aligns with the brand's voice and standards. Copy Chiefs often collaborate closely with creative and marketing teams to deliver compelling, error-free copy that meets project objectives and deadlines.

How does a copy chief typically collaborate with writers and other creative team members on projects?

A Copy Chief works closely with copywriters, editors, designers, and marketing managers to ensure that all written content meets brand guidelines and project objectives. They provide feedback, mentor writers, and often lead brainstorming or review sessions to refine messaging. Effective communication and the ability to balance creative vision with strategic goals are essential in this collaborative environment, as the Copy Chief ensures consistency and quality across all deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copy chief, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copy Chief, you need exceptional editing, writing, and leadership skills, usually backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field and extensive editorial experience. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides like AP or Chicago, and proofreading tools is essential. Superior communication, critical thinking, and the ability to mentor and manage a team distinguish outstanding Copy Chiefs. These skills ensure high-quality, consistent content and a productive editorial workflow, which are vital for organizational reputation and efficiency.

Job description

The New Republic is looking for an experienced full-time copy editor to edit The TNR Blue Book, our new morning newsletter devoted to covering Democrats and progressive groups, and other editorial newsletters, while supporting our current copy editor on NewRepublic.com as needed.

The ideal candidate is a fast, careful editor with a sharp eye for detail who can seamlessly pivot between newsletter production, marketing emails, and news. The candidate should be organized and know how to prioritize assignments and manage their schedule.

Additional Requirements:

  • At least seven years of copyediting experience, preferably at a news website or magazine.
  • Experience with basic fact-checking.
  • Familiarity with AP style and the ability to help maintain TNR's style guide while designing effective systems to update staff of both house and AP style changes.
  • Comfort learning third-party applications, building editorial newsletters, and managing newsletter production and distribution to subscribers.

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining why you're the right candidate to copyedit The TNR Blue Book, Fighting Words, and Power Mad, and our online news coverage. Candidates will be required to complete a copyediting test prior to interviews.

This is a full-time position. Please note the unique hours: Because The TNR Blue Book goes out early to subscribers and some fresh content is produced in the early morning, the hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. The minimum salary for this role is $49,500.

The position is covered by the collective-bargaining agreement between The New Republic and The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, AFL-CIO.

The New Republic is committed to diversity and encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with criminal records, veterans, and people with disabilities.
