Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with rare in-person meetings (location-dependent). Not expected to be on-site during convention dates but preferred.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Copy Writing Manager is the voice of the convention, responsible for shaping, polishing, and overseeing all written communication across the event's public platforms. In this leadership role, you will manage a team of writers to ensure that everything from website announcements, social media posts, and mobile app updates to physical copy and on-site signage is engaging, accurate, and on-brand. If you are a highly organized wordsmith who can coordinate schedules, maintain a unified brand voice under tight deadlines, and mentor a creative team, this role is a perfect match.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: 5-10 hours per month for planning and communication
  • As convention approaches: Gradually increasing to 3-5 hours per week
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is not required
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence is not required
Key Responsibilities

Your role will combine creative direction, team management, and editorial oversight:

  • Brand Voice & Editorial Direction: Following the brand voice policy, establish, maintain, and champion a cohesive, welcoming, and exciting brand voice across all written mediums representing the convention
  • Multi-Channel Content Coordination: Collaborate with Marketing, Web, Social Media, and Programming departments to oversee the timely delivery of written assets for the convention website, social media posts, and printed materials.
  • Schedule & Workflow Management: Develop and maintain the writing team's project pipeline and schedules. You will use spreadsheets to track copy deadlines and ensure quick turnarounds
  • On-Site Messaging Triage: Remain readily available (online or otherwise) during the convention to rapidly write, edit, or approve emergency announcements, schedule change notifications, or crisis communication copy on the fly.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Leadership & Management Experience: Proven ability to lead, organize, and inspire a creative team of writers, delegate tasks effectively, and maintain morale under deadline pressures
  • Organizational Prowess: Exceptional skills in logistics and workflow tracking; you must be highly comfortable managing spreadsheets or calendars to track deadlines and team assignments
  • Exemplary Editing & Copywriting Skills: A flawless grasp of grammar, syntax, and punctuation, combined with the ability to write catchy, accessible, and community-focused copy
  • Problem-Solving & Agility: The ability to "think on your feet" and draft clear, professional communication rapidly when schedules shift or unexpected event updates occur

Preferred:

  • Convention or Fandom Knowledge: Firsthand understanding of convention culture and the specific tone, humor, and vocabulary that resonates with fan-driven event attendees
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: The ability to navigate creative differences, give diplomatic feedback to writers, and manage high-stress communication timelines calmly and authoritatively
  • Professional Communications Background: Prior experience in marketing, public relations, journalism, or professional editing/publishing
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request
