What is a controls estimator?

A controls estimator is a professional who calculates the costs and prepares estimates for control systems in construction or manufacturing projects. They analyze project plans, specifications, and technical data to determine material, labor, and equipment costs, often using estimating software. Strong knowledge of control systems, engineering principles, and budgeting is essential for this role.

What jobs will boom in 2026?

Controls Estimators are expected to see growth due to increasing demand for automation and building management systems. Skills in HVAC, PLC programming, and familiarity with control system software will be valuable as infrastructure projects and smart building developments expand. The role may also benefit from certifications in controls and automation technology.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Controls Estimators typically do not earn $2,000 a day; such high daily rates are more common in specialized consulting, executive roles, or highly experienced contractors in fields like construction management or engineering. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and extensive experience. Most standard control estimating roles pay a salary or project-based fees that are lower than this daily rate.

What's the average salary of an estimator?

The average salary of a controls estimator typically ranges from $60,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience, certifications, and geographic location. Familiarity with cost estimation software (like Accubid, Bluebeam, or QuickBooks), construction drawings, and relevant certifications such as ASPE or industry-related credentials is beneficial. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams are key soft skills in this profession. These skills ensure precise project cost calculations, clear communication with project stakeholders, and smooth project execution.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Controls Estimator on a weekly basis?

A Controls Estimator typically spends their week analyzing project blueprints and specifications, preparing detailed cost estimates for building automation and control systems, and coordinating with engineers, project managers, and vendors to gather necessary information. They often participate in site visits, review proposals and contracts, and refine estimates based on feedback or new project developments. Collaboration and communication are key, as the estimator works closely with both internal teams and external clients to ensure scope clarity and deliver accurate pricing. This dynamic role often offers opportunities to develop advanced technical knowledge and project management skills.
