What Is a Control Systems Engineer?
A control systems engineer’s duties include designing, building and maintaining instrumentation, monitors, and other equipment used to control complex systems. Some examples of these control systems include navigation networks, production machinery gauges, and computer system monitors. It is the control systems engineer’s job to maintain safe and efficient field operation of the equipment and to ensure the safety of those utilizing the equipment. These skilled engineers are typically well versed in mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering concepts and design.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Control Systems Engineer, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by Control Systems Engineers in fast-paced industrial environments?
What are control systems engineers?
What is the difference between Control Systems Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?
| Aspect | Control Systems Engineer | Electrical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) | Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred |
| Work Environment | Design, develop, and test control systems in manufacturing, automation, or robotics industries | Design, develop, and test electrical systems in power, electronics, or communication sectors |
| Industry Usage | Common in automation, robotics, manufacturing, and process control | Widespread across power generation, electronics, telecommunications, and industrial sectors |
Control Systems Engineers focus on designing and maintaining automated control systems, while Electrical Engineers work on broader electrical systems. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, but their industry applications and daily tasks differ.

The Precision Control Actuation System organization staffs mechanical engineers for a variety of roles supporting primarily control section Integrated Product Teams. You will be expected to flex responsibilities based on the current needs of the organization and their respective skill sets.
What You Will Do
At this grade level, you will be expected to work autonomously with limited oversight, have advanced understanding of the Systems Engineering domain, manage small projects that enhance PCAS organization around assigned program work, and provide guidance to other professionals.
Support may include but is not limited to detailed systems design, test design and execution, systems engineering, proposals and estimates, or earned value management.
In this position, the candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of high performance actuation system and motion control challenges, such as aerodynamic steering, thrust vectoring, attitude and divert maneuvering, pointing, and stabilizing of missile systems & subsystems.
Responsibility will cover a portion of the life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support.
You will be expected to apply sound systems engineering principles to define and solve sometimes complex system problems while influencing engineering teams to include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, software and firmware engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.
The position will address requirements development for actuation systems, sub-units, modules and software/firmware; improve systems tools and processes for actuation systems; aid development of Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) standards; leverage Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices for actuation systems; enhance standardized actuation system architectures with modularity, scalability and adaptability; improve standardized verification methods and approaches for Design Verification Testing, Qualification Testing and Acceptance Test; create re-usable and scalable design and development documents to maximize cross-program efficiency. The candidate working with the multi-disciplinary actuation team will implement these systems engineering practices on program applications and influence continuous improvement methodologies to increase efficiency and eliminate systemic issues.
Day-to-day activities are highly collaborative, both internally across Raytheon as well as externally with suppliers, partners and customers.
What You Will Learn
The PCAS organization provides a strong technical learning environment with a dedicated technology pyramid comprised of engineering fellows. PCAS engineers are provided the opportunity for direct access to these subject matter experts, fostering accelerated technical growth.
Hands-on opportunity is plentiful, as great emphasis is put on exposing designers to the hardware through participation in prototype building and verification testing, thus enabling firsthand knowledge of system performance.
Qualifications You Must Have
