What is a contractual robot designer?

A Contractual Robot Designer is a professional who creates and develops robotic systems or components on a contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee. These designers work with clients to understand project requirements, design robotic solutions, and often assist with prototyping and testing. Their expertise can range from mechanical and electronic design to software programming, depending on the project. Contractual Robot Designers typically work for multiple clients, providing flexible and specialized services for industrial, commercial, or research applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractual robot designer?

To thrive as a Contractual Robot Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, robotics, and CAD design, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with robotics development platforms, programming languages like Python or C++, and simulation software such as ROS or SolidWorks is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure innovative, functional robot designs that meet client specifications and project goals within set timelines.

What are the typical challenges faced when working as a contractual robot designer, and how can they be addressed?

Contractual robot designers often face challenges such as rapidly adapting to new client requirements, managing tight project deadlines, and integrating their designs into existing systems. Since contractual roles can involve working with multiple clients or industries, designers must quickly understand different technical standards and collaborate efficiently with diverse engineering teams. To address these challenges, it's important to maintain clear communication with stakeholders, stay organized with project management tools, and continuously update technical skills to remain competitive and effective in varied environments.

What is the difference between Contractual Robot Design vs Mechanical Robot Engineer?

AspectContractual Robot DesignMechanical Robot Engineer
CredentialsRelevant engineering degrees, certifications in robotics or automationMechanical engineering degree, robotics certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentProject-based, client sites, design studiosDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, research centers
Industry UsageUsed by robotics firms, automation companies, consulting agenciesEmployed in manufacturing, R&D, and industrial sectors

Contractual Robot Design focuses on creating robotic systems on a project basis, often for specific clients, emphasizing design and customization. Mechanical Robot Engineers typically work within companies or labs, involved in ongoing development, testing, and manufacturing of robotic systems. Both roles require engineering credentials, but Contractual Robot Design is more client and project-oriented, while Mechanical Robot Engineering is more technical and production-focused.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Robotics Data Foundation (RDF) team builds Anduril's vehicle telemetry backbone, from onboard systems to cloud. This includes onboard data recording and backhaul, ingestion into our cloud data platform, normalizing data across flight controllers and vehicle management systems, mission systems, and sensor payloads, and making it available to a range of downstream 1st and 3rd-party analysis tools. Our vehicle telemetry platform powers software and hardware development, T&E workflows, production incident response, and contractual customer reporting today, and underpins new product development, fleet-wide analysis, simulation, and machine learning workflows. Anduril sits on the world's largest defense robotics data asset, and the RDF team is working to operationalize that across the board.
ABOUT THE JOB
As an engineer on the Robotics Data Foundation team, you will design and build the Anduril-wide cloud systems that host our ingestion pipelines, storage systems, and tooling that carry vehicle telemetry from onboard systems to the cloud and make it discoverable, searchable, and analyzable across the fleet. You'll normalize data across flight controllers, vehicle management systems, mission systems, and sensor payloads, and expose it to downstream 1st- and 3rd-party analysis tools, and build infrastructure that supports large-scale batch ingestion of recorded telemetry, as well as low-latency streaming.
  • Build reliable and performant cloud data systems: Our software ingests high volumes of telemetry across Anduril, so the systems we ship must be high-availability and stable when processing high-scale vehicle telemetry.
  • Design extensible telemetry and data architectures: Robotics teams have diverse data sources that are often unique to a platform or sensor. Our architecture must enable easy integration of bespoke data sources into our standardized ingestion framework.
  • Enable data-driven engineering in real-time: We own the software that delivers live telemetry streams and recorded data to cloud destinations and analysis tools so engineers, operators, and test teams across locations can understand their systems in real-time.
  • Build and develop cloud-native systems that are also edge-compatible: While we are responsible for delivering an excellent cloud data platform experience for all teams across Anduril, we also deliver a subset of capabilities to edge nodes to facilitate telemetry capture in offline / air-gapped settings. You will also be responsible for fielding data systems to classified environments.
  • Eagerly engage with our customers: We partner closely with business line engineering teams to understand their specific data requirements and iteratively deliver solutions that meet their particular needs and constraints.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with modern lakehouse architectures (Iceberg, Delta Lake), ETL systems (Flyte, Dagster, Airflow, Argo Workflows), and distributed data processing engines (Spark, Trino, etc.).
  • Experience developing and operating high-throughput streaming data pipelines (leveraging systems like Spark Streaming, Flink, Kafka).
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Java, Rust, and/or Go (the team predominantly uses Python & Rust for core backend services and pipelines).
  • Experience building and operating cloud systems, including common containerization and deployability technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, GitOps systems like FluxCD / ArgoCD).
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export controlled data. Eligibility to obtain/maintain a US Top Secret clearance is also desirable.
