DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
The Steelmaking Operations Specialist supports Steelmaking performance by providing technical expertise, process guidance, and operational support to shift crews producing safe, high-quality slabs in a highly automated facility. This role focuses on process optimization, quality improvement, cost control, inventory management, continuous improvement, and compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards to support ArcelorMittal Calvert's business objectives.
The Basics:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in scrap and alloy management, including experience with market analysis, contract negotiation, and logistics management
  • Strong decision-making, analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Computer skills to include SAP and Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards related to scrap and alloy materials, such as ISO 9001, Environmental and OSHA regulations

The Extras:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, Metallurgy, or a related field; or equivalent industry experience
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Technical knowledge of Steelmaking equipment, operations, and process control systems
  • Experience with root cause analysis and continuous improvement methodologies
  • 2+ years of experience in a Steelmaking-focused specialist, coordinator, engineering, or operational support role
  • Experience working in a steel manufacturing environment preferred
  • Process control and troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of Steelmaking processes, equipment, and production parameters

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Monitor and evaluate Steelmaking performance related to production, quality, cost, and throughput KPIs and implement corrective actions when performance targets are not achieved
  • Monitor Steelmaking process parameters, identify deviations from standards, and implement corrective measures to improve performance
  • Ensure Steelmaking operations comply with all applicable environmental, safety, and operational regulations
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development for safety incidents, environmental events, quality defects, equipment failures, and production losses
  • Develop, review, and update operational work instructions and facilitate HIRAC reviews as required
  • Lead and support continuous improvement projects focused on safety, quality, cost reduction, productivity, and process stability
  • Coordinate and support product trials while providing process expertise and operational guidance
  • Maintain and optimize grade practice sheets and process parameters to improve productivity, quality, yield, energy efficiency, and consumable usage
  • Collaborate with Steelmaking operations, including EAF, LMF, RH, Caster, and Maintenance departments, to optimize overall Steelmaking performance
  • Coordinate activities with other areas, such as, Hot Strip Mill and Production Planning to improve slab logistics, hot charging efficiency, and customer service
  • Manage Steelmaking consumables and departmental inventory, including ordering materials and maintaining inventory levels
  • Track vendor invoices and ensure payments are processed in a timely manner
  • Generate reports and communicate performance results, action plans, and improvement initiatives to department leadership
  • Fulfills the responsibilities required to achieve the Quality Commitment and Environmental Commitment
  • Demonstrates the company values of Safety, Teamwork, Accountability, Relationships, and Sustainability
  • Demonstrates commitment to teamwork by fostering an environment that embodies trust and respect and accountability
  • Ensure working knowledge of competencies as defined in ISO 14001 (current version), IATF 16949 (current version), and ISO 17025 (current version)

YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Industrial setting and office setting in steelmaking facility
  • The first year will be construction and commissioning of the facility and processes
  • Gulf coast region in Calvert, AL
  • Days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads
  • People with heart pacemakers or any other electronic medical device are strictly prohibited from entering the furnace area. These devices include implanted pacemakers or implantable cardiac defibrillators where the device may be affected. Individuals identified to potentially work in EMF affected areas should identify the specific device they have as part of a medical history and manufacturer's recommendations should be followed.
