Contractor Internship information

What is a contractor internship?

A contractor internship is a temporary position where an intern works for a company as an independent contractor rather than as a traditional employee. This arrangement typically involves specific project-based work with defined deliverables and timelines. Contractor interns often have more flexibility and autonomy but may not receive the same benefits as regular employees. These internships can provide valuable real-world experience and help build professional networks in the industry.

Contractor Internships are typically entry-level positions for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience in construction or engineering projects. Project Engineers are more experienced roles responsible for overseeing project execution, planning, and coordination. While both roles work within the construction and engineering industries, internships focus on learning and exposure, whereas Project Engineers handle project management tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contractor Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractor Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in construction management or engineering, often supported by enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with project management software, drafting tools like AutoCAD, and safety compliance systems is typically expected. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout interns apart. These abilities are crucial for supporting project teams, ensuring compliance, and contributing to successful project delivery in a fast-paced environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Contractor Internship?

As a Contractor Intern, you will often be assigned to support ongoing client projects or internal initiatives, depending on the organization's needs. Tasks may include data analysis, research, administrative support, or assisting with project management activities. You'll typically work under the guidance of a project manager or senior contractor, collaborating closely with both full-time staff and other interns. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills, and build a network within your chosen industry.

Our reputation is built on trust, integrity, and developing people who want longterm careers in construction.

The Opportunity: As a Project Engineer at Danis, you’ll be an integral part of the project team from the start — not stuck on an island pushing paperwork. You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, designers, and trade partners to help plan, coordinate, and execute work in the field and the office.

This role offers broad exposure to the full construction process, with real responsibility and mentorship designed to help you grow. Whether your longterm goal is Project Management, Supervision, or another leadership path, you’ll gain handson experience, strong technical foundations, and support along the way.

What You’ll DoProject Planning & Coordination
  • Support the Project Manager and Superintendent with daytoday project coordination and execution
  • Help develop and maintain project schedules, coordinating work across subcontractors, suppliers, and field teams
  • Participate in constructability reviews and site logistics planning to identify challenges early
  • Serve as a communication link between the field, designers, owners, and internal teams
  • Track progress, documentation, and coordination items using project management software
Field Support, Quality & Safety
  • Assist with reviewing work to ensure alignment with drawings, specifications, and Danis quality standards
  • Review submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for accuracy and completeness
  • Support layout verification and onsite coordination to resolve design or installation conflicts
  • Participate in safety meetings, audits, and preinstallation reviews
  • Help track inspections, testing, and quality documentation
Cost & Documentation
  • Assist with identifying, documenting, and tracking scope and cost changes
  • Maintain accurate project records, including RFIs, submittals, drawings, logs, and field reports
  • Support purchase order and change documentation
  • Participate in monthly project reviews and audits
Collaboration & Relationships
  • Build strong working relationships with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners
  • Communicate clearly and proactively to keep teams aligned and issues moving toward resolution
  • Contribute to a jobsite culture focused on teamwork, accountability, and professionalism
  • Represent Danis with integrity onsite and within the industry

What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred
  • 2–5 years of construction experience with a general contractor (internship or fulltime)
  • Able to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problemsolving skills
  • A proactive, teamoriented mindset and interest in building a longterm career
Working Environment:
  • This role includes time spent in both the office and on active construction sites. Travel between regional offices may be required. Field work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and standard construction environments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, lift up to 50 pounds, remain on your feet for extended periods, and safely navigate active job sites.
Why Danis
  • Longterm career opportunities at a stable, thirdgeneration familyowned builder
  • Handson learning and mentorship supported by Danis University and experienced leaders
  • Exposure to diverse and technically challenging projects
  • Competitive compensation, profit sharing, and internal growth opportunities
