These nurses are typically hired through staffing agencies or directly by the hospital to fill short-term needs, such as covering staff shortages, leaves of absence, or periods of high patient census. Contract RNs perform the same clinical duties as regular staff nurses, including patient care, administering medications, and collaborating with the healthcare team. They may enjoy flexible schedules and higher hourly wages, but contract positions often do not include the same benefits as permanent roles.

Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic, current BLS/ACLS certifications, and knowledge of hospital protocols are typically required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help contract nurses integrate quickly and deliver patient-centered care. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient care in a dynamic hospital environment where rapid onboarding and effective collaboration are essential.
