What does a contract structural engineer do?

A Contract Structural Engineer is a professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to analyze, design, and oversee the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, or other infrastructure. Their main responsibility is to ensure that these structures are safe, stable, and comply with building codes and regulations. They work closely with architects, contractors, and clients to develop structural solutions that meet project requirements. Contract Structural Engineers may handle a variety of tasks, from creating detailed technical drawings to inspecting work on-site and providing engineering reports.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, strong analytical skills, and a relevant engineering degree with professional certification (such as PE or Chartered Engineer status). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, or AutoCAD, and familiarity with building codes and standards, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams effectively. These skills and qualifications are essential for delivering safe, compliant, and cost-effective structural solutions within project constraints.

What are some typical challenges a contract structural engineer faces when working with multiple clients and projects simultaneously?

As a Contract Structural Engineer, managing multiple clients and projects concurrently often requires strong organizational skills and the ability to balance competing priorities. You may encounter challenges such as adapting to different project requirements, coordinating with various teams, and ensuring that all deliverables meet specific codes and standards within tight deadlines. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are essential, as you'll frequently collaborate with architects, contractors, and project managers to address design changes or resolve site issues. Staying updated on industry best practices and maintaining flexibility can help you navigate these common challenges successfully.

Job description

Department Focus

The Design Engineering function supports business needs and continuous improvement efforts through appropriate technical product and engineering fundamentals development in employees and management. This position requires a person with a strong technical engineering background a continuous improvement mindset and a high level of organization.

Job Description and Duties:

Principle Duties:

Provides a high level of non-supervisory engineering work on broad project assignments though all phases of new unit design, development, manufacture, test, and commissioning.  Works with Lead Engineers and Project managers to understand and prioritize assigned work. Provides technical expertise and some work direction to colleagues who are working together on assigned project tasks.

Principal duties performed in collaboration with the Lead Design Engineer or Engineering Manager consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Translates contract design specifications and code requirements into the requisite product design of components, subassemblies, and assemblies.
  • Oversees and performs preparation of manufacturing drawings, contractual submittals, calculations and analysis, procedures, test plans, and reports. Many of these activities require close collaboration with other departments.
  • Provides necessary technical support to end users during the installation and commissioning of HTI manufactured equipment, and other areas of customer support, as directed by the Lead Engineer or Engineering Manager.
  • As needed supports application sales and staff engineers in determining the appropriate application of equipment, interpretation of specifications, material recommendations, code compliance, and supplementary data to support sales and warranty activities. This is expected to be an occasional duty.
  • Supports contract manufacturing activities, such as by providing technical guidance to manufacturing that ensures contract design requirements are fulfilled. Supports justification and disposition of discrepancies that arise during manufacturing in compliance with contract requirements. Utilizes HTI’s engineering change process to implement suggested improvements and corrections.
  • Works closely with test personnel to develop test procedures, determine test requirements, interpret test results, and release test reports. Some Design Engineers at HTI are asked to specialize in testing related activities and will be certified as a Test Engineer, with associated duties.
  • Participates in or leads development projects in the expansion and improvement of existing and new products.
  • Suggests and implements improvements to process documentation, training materials, and is involved in the training activities of new and existing engineers. This is a minor but important part of the role.

Performing the duties of this role requires well-developed analytical skills that can be applied to the design and analysis of rotating mechanical equipment. Engineers in this role will be expected to apply engineering fundamentals and use their broad working knowledge of design stress calculations, analyses, manufacturing, and design, to solve varying and complex problems. Some potentially relevant areas of knowledge and experience include structural design and vibration, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mechanical design and assembly, rotordynamics, root cause analysis, and material selection.

Design engineers are responsible for authoring, checking, and approving, most types of contract documents. These may include design calculations, analysis, drawings, test reports, design code required items, quality program documents, bills of material, and more. The role may require concepting new designs, modifying existing designs, and performing novel calculations to verify both. Some contracts require work that is first-of-its kind for the company, with no prior references.

All Engineers are expected to support continuous improvement of various HTI processes, procedures, calculation templates, and other items. Design Engineers may be asked to lead training of colleagues in their areas of expertise.

Other related duties may be assigned as needed to support the successful completion of contracts, with non-engineering related duties only occasionally.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Due to Federal Contract requirements, US Citizenship is required for this position.
  • BSME and 4-8 years of mechanical engineering design and analysis in the field of mechanical design such as pumps, turbines, or compressors, with preferred experience in industrial rotating machinery, power generation or chemical process industries.
  • Strong SolidWorks or solid modeling skills in other software.
  • Experience conducting linear stress analysis with manual or finite element analysis techniques.
  • Experience with some FEA analysis types such as static, thermal, frequency, transient, and non-linear.
  • An understanding of rotating equipment design codes, governing regulations, and industry practice, OR the ability to quickly develop such an understanding.
  • Experience with the ASME Code B&PV code, Section VIII or Section III is preferred.
  • Ability to read & interpret engineering drawings, standards and specifications. Comfortable with GD&T.
  • A comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering principles associated with the design, analysis and operation of centrifugal pumps is preferred.
  • Expected travel of 10-20% may be required.
  • Proficient in MathCad or other similar programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, great at simplifying problems, communicates well with all people.
  • Possess good attention to detail, personal organization, manages time well, and drives tasks through to completion.
  • Self-aware, speaks up, and has a growth mindset.
