What is a contract software engineering manager?

A Contract Software Engineering Manager is a professional who leads and oversees software development teams on a contractual basis, rather than as a permanent employee. They are responsible for managing engineering projects, guiding developers, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality software solutions. Typically, they work for a specific duration or on particular projects, providing leadership, technical expertise, and process improvements. This role is ideal for organizations seeking temporary management support or specialized leadership for critical projects. Contract Software Engineering Managers often bring diverse experience from various industries and projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract software engineering manager?

To thrive as a Contract Software Engineering Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, deep software development knowledge, and experience managing engineering teams, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, Scrum Master) is often required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and conflict-resolution skills help build trust and drive team performance in diverse, dynamic environments. These competencies ensure timely project delivery, high code quality, and effective collaboration with stakeholders.

What are some unique challenges faced by contract software engineering managers compared to full-time managers?

Contract software engineering managers often face the challenge of quickly integrating into new teams and company cultures while rapidly understanding ongoing projects. They must establish trust and effective communication in a short period, all while delivering results within limited contract timelines. Additionally, contract managers may need to balance stakeholder expectations and project deliverables without the long-term context or authority that permanent managers might have. Adaptability, strong onboarding skills, and proactive relationship-building are key to thriving in this role.

Job description

At ZoomInfo, we encourage creativity, value innovation, demand teamwork, expect accountability and cherish results. We value your take charge, take initiative, get stuff done attitude and will help you unlock your growth potential. One great choice can change everything. Thrive with us at ZoomInfo.

ZoomInfo is looking for a technical and people-focused Engineering Manager to lead our Integrations team-the group responsible for building and managing our suite of integrations. This team will ensure that every customer, regardless of their tech stack, can put ZoomInfo data to work exactly where and when it matters most.

In this role, you'll lead a team of talented backend engineers to design, develop, and operate distributed systems that scale with millions of requests per day. You'll balance execution with mentorship, strategy with empathy, and architecture with pragmatism. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in product, TPM, and other engineering teams to ship high-impact features while fostering a culture of technical excellence and shared ownership.

What you will do:

  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of front and backend engineers focused on delivering reliable, scalable systems for ZoomInfo's platform.
  • Set technical direction and priorities for the Integrations group, helping your team make thoughtful architectural decisions using technologies like Java, TypeScript, NestJS, MongoDB, and Confluent Cloud.
  • Drive execution of key projects, balancing roadmap delivery with engineering best practices, such as clean code, testing, observability, and CI/CD.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, TPMs, and stakeholders to define goals, clarify requirements, and ensure alignment.
  • Promote a healthy engineering culture, encouraging curiosity, ownership, innovation, and continuous learning across multiple sites.
  • Recruit and onboard new talent, ensuring a smooth and inclusive team experience.

What you will bring:

  • 4+ years of engineering management experience, including direct mentorship and performance management of engineers.
  • Proven ability to build and scale engineering teams from the ground up - including defining hiring roadmaps, establishing team culture and norms, and onboarding engineers into a newly formed group. Comfortable operating with ambiguity in early-stage team structures.
  • Experience leading and coordinating distributed engineering teams across multiple time zones and geographies. Skilled at establishing clear communication rhythms, shared ownership models, and inclusive team practices that bridge US and India-based engineers effectively.
  • 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, preferably with modern backend stacks such as TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS and Java.
  • Proven ability to design and operate large-scale distributed systems, ideally in a SaaS or product-driven environment.
  • Deep familiarity building and maintaining integrations to major CRM and MAP platforms, including their data models, API constraints, rate limits, webhook patterns, and sync reliability challenges - with specific experience across Salesforce, HubSpot, and Microsoft Dynamics 365.
  • Experience working with no-code integration and data pipeline platforms such as Fivetran; able to guide teams on trade-offs between managed connectors and native integrations.
  • Solid understanding of modern auth protocols in the context of third-party integrations, including OAuth 2.0, JWT, and API key management - with experience handling token lifecycle, scopes, refresh flows, and multi-tenant credential management.
  • Experience working with both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Google Cloud Bigtable, Redis) - including data modeling, query performance, and operational considerations at scale
  • Experience with major cloud platforms (AWS or GCP); GCP familiarity a plus, particularly Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and GKE
  • Fluency in API design principles for integration-heavy systems: REST, webhooks, bulk sync, idempotency, retry semantics, and rate limiting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills-you can translate between technical and non-technical audiences with ease.
  • A collaborative, pragmatic mindset with a bias toward action and delivering customer value.
