Job description

Job Summary
School Bus drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and related events. School bus drivers pick up students at a designated location, such as street corners or homes and drop them off at school.
Duties and Responsibilities
Transport students in a timely manner to and from school and/or school activities while following safety procedures and applicable State Board of Education rules and regulations.
  1. Operate and safely drive a school bus in either good or adverse weather, road and traffic conditions while transporting passengers to school or special events. Comply with traffic regulations while operating vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
  2. Communicate bus rules, safety and behavior requirements to passengers; and address improper behavior immediately while using appropriate interpersonal communication skills.
  3. Communicate with student's parents to solve inappropriate or unsafe behavior utilizing strong interpersonal communication skills.
  4. Assist students and passengers boarding and unloading the bus when necessary, including wheelchair students and adaptive equipment.
  5. Inspect buses daily to identify and report deficiencies. Perform vehicle maintenance procedures such as fluid and fuel levels, tire pressure checks, clean internal and external areas, install tire chains, and any other normal daily maintenance as required.
  6. Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
  7. Responsible to know rules, regulations (Federal, State and District) and laws concerning operation of a school bus; and comply with all traffic regulations.
  8. Comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  9. Complete all records and reports timely and accurately and submit to Transportation Department.
  10. Read maps, follow written and geographic directions according to route / trip logs.
  11. Operation of a two-way radio.
  12. Maintain cleanliness to ensure safe operating conditions.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.

Experience and Skill Requirements:
  • Class A or B CDL, OR the ability to obtain.
  • Endorsements: Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) or as Required.
  • Ability to pass medical examination.

Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and appropriately gather and analyze information.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to maintain confidentiality, be open to innovative ideas, and work successfully both on an independent basis and on a team. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with a wide range of management styles within the Company and build community relationships.
  • Oral Communication: Ability to organize thoughts and speak persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrate group presentation skills and conduct effective meetings.
  • Written Communication: Good writing skills using good spelling, punctuation, grammar; detail-oriented in editing written documents; ability to present numerical and statistical data effectively; and ability to accurately interpret and communicate written information.
  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to prioritize and plan work activities to ensure the timely completion of projects and development of realistic action plans.
  • Quality: Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness and monitor own work to ensure quality.
  • Adaptability: Able to quickly adapt and respond to a rapidly changing work environment and manage competing demands in a productive manner.
  • Dependability: Demonstrated ability to consistently be at work and on time as scheduled, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback to improve performance.
