Contract Robot Programming information

What are some common challenges faced in contract robot programming projects?

Contract robot programming professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to different clients' proprietary systems, quickly learning new programming environments, and troubleshooting unexpected integration issues on-site. Projects may involve working with various robot brands, each with unique programming languages and safety protocols, which requires flexibility and ongoing learning. Additionally, tight deadlines and the need to coordinate closely with engineering teams and operators can add complexity, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential for success.

What is contract robot programming?

Contract robot programming refers to hiring specialized professionals or firms on a contractual basis to design, write, and implement software that controls robotic systems. These programmers typically work on industrial robots used in manufacturing, automation, or other specialized applications. They may be responsible for programming robots to perform specific tasks, optimizing performance, and ensuring safety standards are met. Contract work allows companies to access expert skills for short-term projects without committing to full-time hires.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract robot programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Robot Programmer, you need expertise in robotics programming languages (such as RAPID, KRL, or FANUC TP), automation systems, and a strong background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with industrial robot controllers, PLCs, simulation software, and certifications like FANUC Certified Robot Operator or Siemens PLC are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set standout programmers apart when collaborating with clients and troubleshooting in diverse environments. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and customized automation solutions that meet client specifications and industry standards.

Job description

Build the Automation Solutions Behind Complex Enterprise Sales

Prime Robotics is seeking a Senior Sales Engineer to design and position automation solutions for warehouse, distribution, e-commerce, and manufacturing operations.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who combines material-handling expertise with strong customer-facing and analytical skills. You will work directly with customer operational data, create conceptual layouts in AutoCAD, model system performance using simulation tools, size and price solutions, and communicate the resulting technical and financial business case to customer stakeholders.

You will serve as the technical lead on complex opportunities from initial discovery through proposal, executive presentation, contract award, and transition to implementation. You will work closely with Prime Robotics' commercial, engineering, product, and customer-success teams and will have meaningful influence over both revenue and product direction.

What You'll Do
  • Lead technical discovery with customers to understand their operational challenges, growth plans, labor constraints, service requirements, facility limitations, and investment objectives.
  • Analyze customer data-including order profiles, SKU characteristics, inventory, throughput, labor, workflows, and service levels-to define automation requirements.
  • Develop conceptual warehouse layouts, equipment arrangements, material flows, and system interfaces using AutoCAD.
  • Build discrete-event or material-flow simulation models to validate throughput, capacity, queue behavior, equipment utilization, and resource requirements.
  • Design and size integrated automation solutions involving technologies such as autonomous mobile robots, goods-to-person systems, AS/RS, conveyor and sortation, pallet handling, pick stations, and warehouse software.
  • Compare alternative solution concepts and clearly communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, assumptions, and expected performance.
  • Develop equipment, labor, integration, installation, and other preliminary cost estimates in partnership with engineering, operations, vendors, and commercial leadership.
  • Create ROI models and business cases that quantify labor savings, productivity improvement, capacity gains, service-level improvement, and expected payback.
  • Serve as the technical lead on warehouse-automation opportunities ranging from approximately $1 million to $50 million or more.
  • Prepare proposals, technical narratives, layouts, simulation results, performance calculations, and executive-level presentations.
  • Present solutions credibly to stakeholders ranging from operations and engineering teams to directors, senior executives, and C-suite decision-makers.
  • Support pilot programs and emerging product applications by identifying use cases, defining success criteria, and translating results into scalable commercial solutions.
  • Partner with engineering, project delivery, and customer success to validate feasibility, identify execution risks, and ensure a clean transition from the proposed solution to implementation.
  • Improve Prime Robotics' solution-design methods, pricing tools, performance calculators, proposal templates, and technical sales processes.
  • Develop deep expertise across Prime Robotics' product portfolio and act as a trusted technical resource for customers and the commercial organization.
What Success Looks Like

Within your first 60 days, you will develop working expertise across Prime Robotics' product portfolio, solution-design methods, and sales process.

Within your first six months, you will be independently leading technical discovery, developing layouts and performance models, presenting solution concepts, and advancing qualified opportunities alongside the commercial team.

Over time, you will become a trusted advisor to customers and an internal authority on how Prime Robotics' technology can solve complex warehouse-operating challenges.

Location

Prime Robotics is headquartered in the Denver area, and Denver-based candidates are preferred because of the opportunity for closer collaboration with our product, engineering, and leadership teams. We will also consider highly qualified candidates based elsewhere in the United States who can travel regularly to customer and company locations.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of relevant experience in sales engineering, solutions engineering, application engineering, solution design, concept development, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or a comparable customer-facing technical role.
  • At least two years of direct experience with a material-handling systems integrator, warehouse-automation OEM, or warehouse-robotics provider.
  • Hands-on AutoCAD experience creating or modifying conceptual warehouse layouts, equipment arrangements, material flows, and system interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with discrete-event or material-flow simulation used to evaluate warehouse throughput, capacity, queues, equipment utilization, or resource requirements.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as AnyLogic, FlexSim, Simio, Emulate3D, Arena, ProModel, or a comparable platform.
  • Working knowledge of several warehouse-automation technologies, such as AMRs, goods-to-person systems, AS/RS, shuttle systems, conveyor and sortation, pallet handling, robotic picking, or pick-to-light, voice, and vision systems.
  • Understanding of warehouse software architecture and system interfaces, including WMS, WES, WCS, and equipment-level controls.
  • Strong quantitative skills and experience translating operational data into system requirements, performance calculations, solution sizing, and financial models.
  • Experience supporting complex, multi-stakeholder automation opportunities from discovery and concept development through proposal and customer presentation.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts and financial tradeoffs clearly to both engineering teams and executive audiences.
  • Strong project-management, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial, mechanical, systems, electrical, mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline-or equivalent directly relevant experience.
Particularly Valuable Experience
  • Designing solutions for projects valued at $1 million or more.
  • Comparing multiple automation technologies and recommending the appropriate approach based on operational and financial requirements.
  • Creating detailed labor-savings, ROI, throughput, and capacity models.
  • Supporting customer pilots or commercializing emerging automation products.
  • Experience with solution pricing, cost estimating, proposal development, or commercial risk review.
  • Experience progressing from controls, commissioning, project engineering, or mechanical systems engineering into customer-facing solution design.
  • Lean Six Sigma, PMP, or similar certification.
  • Familiarity with Python, SQL, advanced Excel, or other tools used to analyze operational data and accelerate solution development.
