The Opportunity
We are seeking an Automation / Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join our Energy and Resources consulting team. This position is intended for Engineers looking to demonstrate and grow their skills and develop a strong foundation in consulting-based Automation / instrumentation and control system design.
The successful candidate will work as part of an integrated, multidisciplinary design team, supporting projects across North America. Our portfolio includes mining and mineral processing, power generation and distribution, oil & gas, renewable energy, and energy transition projects. This role offers the chance to lead as well as support project design on projects in multiple sectors. Experience on projects in the mining sector would be a benefit.
Key Responsibilities
As contributing or Lead engineer working with other engineers, EITs, designers, and specialists, responsibilities would include some or all of the following dependent on the project:
Project Development & Execution
• Engineering support for multidisciplinary projects of all sizes and complexities, from proposals and estimating through the design phases PFS, FS, detailed design, construction, commissioning and start-up.
• Site work from time to time including as-is investigations and assessments, scope validation, construction, commissioning and start-up support.
Instrumentation
• Lead the design and development of the gamut of I&C construction drawing deliverables including but not limited to loop and I/O diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument installation drawings, control panel GAs, E&I equipment layouts, wiring/termination diagrams for industrial and mine facilities collaboratively with designers / drafters locally or remotely. Designing using various methods including sketches, diagrams, redlines and electronic models.
• Specify and produce instrumentation specifications and datasheets and support the procurement processes through technical evaluation and selection recommendation.
Controls / Automation
• Design PLC/DCS/HMI/SCADA architectures: controller selection, I/O configuration, redundancy, and integration with third-party systems, and follow through procurement processes.
• Design the integration of vendor supplied equipment packages which are supplied with on-board controls.
• Design control/server rooms: console layouts, engineering-operations network segregation, server racks with mine-hardened enclosures, UPS/redundant power, patch panels/fiber terminations, dust-protected HVAC, and physical security.
• Develop functional specifications, control logic and functional block diagrams, control philosophies covering measurement principles, setpoints, calibration, alarming, sequence of operation, and safety interlocks for miscellaneous auxiliary or equipment packaged systems.
• Perform calculations for I&C equipment and systems including but not limited to: UPS, control panel load, control segment loading, voltage drop, network bandwidth, etc.
Industrial Networking
• Prepare technical specifications for communication network, where experience with underground installation standards is an asset.
• Design facility industrial networks: fiber-optic backbones, supporting control and various other systems and connection to Wi-Fi/LTE coverage.
Project Delivery / Coordination
• Assisting with the development of Construction Work Packages (CWPs) and providing construction phase support, as required.
• Planning, coordinating completion, and reviewing deliverables to ensure quality and consistency.
• Coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Participating in client meetings, design reviews, and value engineering sessions.
• Supporting quality control and design verification activities.
Your Capabilities and Experience:
The best fit engineer for this role will possess these attributes and experience:
  • You are a self-starter, with the ability to handle change and work with minimal supervision.
  • You possess and consistently demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities and willingness to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Previous experience in engineering or EIT role in mining projects is an asset.
  • Demonstrated and reference confirmed ability to produce accurate, well-organized work and perform self-checks for quality and completeness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficiency with MS Office, and a demonstrated ability to learn software tools efficiently
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment including working with remote team members through MS Teams.
  • Experience in the design of underground mines will be a strong asset.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited University
  • 5-10 years of engineering, design, and construction experience in heavy industry, mining, oil & gas, power generation.
  • A Professional Engineering license (or the ability to become licensed).

Pay Range:
• Various Locations in ME, VA-$81,800.00 - $118,600.00 Annually
• Locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA Areas-$90,900.00 - $131,800.00 Annually
• Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas-$100,000.00 - $145,000.00 Annually
• Locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA Areas-$107,300.00 - $155,500.00 Annually
• Locations in NYC & CA (Bay Area) & NJ (RP)-$114,500.00 - $166,100.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave. Regular full-time and part-time employees will receive ten paid holidays in each calendar year. In addition, employees will be eligible to accrue vacation between 10 and 20 days per year and eligible for paid sick leave (and if more generous, in accordance with state and local law).
Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
