What is the difference between Contract Marine vs Marine Technician?

AspectContract MarineMarine Technician
CertificationsSTCW, Basic Safety Training, relevant licensesSTCW, Marine Engineering, HVAC, or electrical certifications
Work EnvironmentOnboard ships, offshore platformsShipyards, maintenance facilities, onboard vessels
Employer & Industry UsageMaritime companies, offshore contractorsShip owners, maintenance companies, marinas
Work ScopeContract-based, specific projects or voyagesOngoing maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting

Contract Marine professionals typically work on a contractual basis onboard ships or offshore platforms, focusing on specific projects or voyages. Marine Technicians often have similar certifications but work in maintenance and repair roles either onboard or at shipyards, providing ongoing technical support. Both roles require maritime safety certifications and industry experience, but Contract Marine roles are more project-specific, while Marine Technicians focus on continuous technical maintenance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Marine, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Marine, you need a solid understanding of maritime operations, navigation, and safety procedures, often supported by relevant certifications such as STCW or merchant mariner credentials. Familiarity with maritime communication systems, GPS navigation, and safety equipment is typically required. Strong teamwork, resilience, and effective communication are essential soft skills for handling the demanding and dynamic nature of marine environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant vessel operations under contract-based assignments.

What are contract marines?

Contract marines are individuals or companies hired on a contractual basis to perform marine-related services, such as vessel operations, logistics, maintenance, or security. Unlike permanent military or company employees, contract marines work under specific agreements for designated projects or timeframes. Their roles may include providing support for offshore oil and gas operations, shipping, or maritime security. Contract marines often bring specialized expertise and flexibility to organizations needing temporary or project-based marine services.

What are some of the unique challenges Contract Marines face when adapting to new assignments or deployments?

Contract Marines often work on short-term or project-based assignments, which can mean quickly adapting to new teams, vessels, or operational environments. This requires strong flexibility, fast learning skills, and the ability to integrate with diverse crews while upholding safety and performance standards. Navigating different maritime regulations, client expectations, and unfamiliar equipment are common challenges, but they also provide valuable experience that can accelerate career growth in the maritime industry.

We're in early growth phase with a proven franchise model and a clear vision: attract certified, skilled technicians who are tired of the same four walls and ready to build something meaningful in a thriving industry.

The Opportunity

This is your chance to be part of a premium marine service operation that's growing fast in one of America's most active boating markets. As a Contract Marine Technician with Full Throttle Marine, you'll execute high-quality service calls across the Tampa Bay corridor—working independently, managing your own schedule, and building a reputation for excellence with discerning boat owners.

You'll operate as a trusted field technician in a professionally managed system. We handle customer acquisition, scheduling, and logistics. You handle the work. It's a clean arrangement that lets you focus on delivering the premium service these customers expect and are willing to pay for.

This is a contract (1099) position with flexible scheduling and compensation structured per job completed. Work volume is consistent and growing as our network expands.

What You'll Do
  • Perform scheduled outboard service at manufacturer intervals (50, 100, and 200-hour) on Yamaha and Mercury platforms
  • Execute winterization and spring commissioning procedures with precision and professionalism
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues in the field, leveraging your expertise to solve problems efficiently
  • Support premium detailing services as needed, maintaining our high-quality brand standard
  • Complete photo documentation and digital service reports after every job—clean, professional, and transparent
  • Represent the Full Throttle Marine brand with pride: uniformed, punctual, prepared, and customer-focused
  • Communicate clearly with our operations team on parts needs, scheduling updates, and job status
  • Build relationships with premium boat owners who value quality work and professional service
What We're Looking ForRequired
  • Active Certification from one or more of the following:
    • ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) — Marine Technician certification
    • Yamaha Marine — Certified Technician (YCT) or equivalent dealer training
    • Mercury Marine — Certified Technician or equivalent factory training
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience servicing outboard engines
  • Strong working knowledge of Yamaha and/or Mercury outboard systems
  • Reliable personal vehicle capable of transporting tools and equipment to job sites
  • Ability to work independently and manage time across multiple daily service calls
  • Professional appearance and strong customer-facing communication skills
  • Valid Florida driver's license and clean driving record
  • Appropriate liability coverage (must carry or be willing to obtain)
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with both 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboard platforms
  • Familiarity with marine electrical systems, fuel delivery, and trim/tilt systems
  • Experience working from a service skiff or dockside (water-side access preferred for some locations)
  • Prior mobile service or field service experience
  • Experience serving high-net-worth clientele or premium service markets
Why Join Full Throttle Marine
  • Competitive Per-Job Compensation — Above market rate for certified technicians. You're paid for quality work.
