What is a contract manufacturing engineer?

A Contract Manufacturing Engineer is a professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to manage and optimize manufacturing processes for a company. Their responsibilities often include designing efficient production systems, ensuring product quality, and collaborating with suppliers or contract manufacturers. They may also help with scaling production, troubleshooting issues, and implementing cost-saving measures. Contract Manufacturing Engineers are typically employed for their specialized expertise and flexibility, supporting organizations during periods of transition, growth, or when specific skills are needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract manufacturing engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and quality assurance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, ERP systems, and Lean or Six Sigma certifications are commonly required for overseeing production efficiency and compliance. Strong project management, problem-solving skills, and effective communication with both internal teams and external vendors make professionals stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective manufacturing solutions and seamless collaboration across organizations.

Job description

Job Title: Contract Manufacturing EngineerJob Description

This contract Manufacturing Engineer role supports a busy CNC machining operation during a temporary medical leave. You will work hands-on on the shop floor, focusing on machining process documentation, CNC setup optimization, and rapid troubleshooting. The position requires a plug-and-play engineer with a strong CNC metal machining background who can immediately contribute with minimal ramp-up in a fast-paced, high-mix environment.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and update CNC machining setup sheets for lathes and mills, ensuring accuracy, repeatability, and clear guidance for operators.
  • Create comprehensive work instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for machining processes that currently rely on tribal knowledge.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues directly on the shop floor, collaborating with machinists to identify root causes and implement effective solutions quickly.
  • Verify proper machine setup and adherence to documented processes, ensuring parts are dialed in correctly and not run incorrectly.
  • Capture undocumented machining processes by shadowing shop floor employees and converting their expertise into formal, standardized documentation.
  • Optimize CNC setup activities to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and support consistent production quality.
  • Ensure routers, job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets are complete, accurate, and aligned with current practices.
Essential Skills
  • Strong CNC metal machining background with hands-on experience on mills and/or lathes.
  • Proven experience creating CNC setup sheets, SOPs, work instructions, and machining documentation such as job setup sheets, setup cards, process sheets, operation sheets, and tool sheets.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience on the shop floor, working directly with machinists and production personnel.
  • background in manufacturing engineering or process engineering within a CNC machining environment.
  • Ability to work independently, hit the ground running, and contribute with minimal direction.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-mix machining environment with frequent changeovers and varied part types.
  • Experience working with metals in CNC machining operations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience documenting and standardizing processes that previously relied on tribal knowledge.
  • Familiarity with CNC routers and related setup activities.
  • Strong attention to detail when verifying machine setups and process adherence.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with shop floor employees to capture and formalize their expertise.
  • Capability to optimize existing machining processes for consistency and efficiency.
Work Environment

This role is based in a shop-floor CNC machining environment that operates at a fast pace with a high mix of parts and frequent setup changes. You will spend significant time working directly with CNC mills, lathes, and potentially routers, interacting closely with machinists and production staff. The work involves hands-on troubleshooting at the machines, verifying setups, and observing live production to capture and document processes. Expect a practical, production-focused setting where safety, precision, and clear communication are essential. Dress appropriately for a manufacturing floor, with suitable protective gear and attire as required for working around CNC equipment and metal machining operations.
