What is contract logistics?

Contract logistics refers to the outsourcing of resource management tasks such as warehousing, transportation, inventory management, and distribution to specialized third-party providers. These providers design and implement customized supply chain solutions to help businesses optimize their operations and reduce costs. By leveraging contract logistics, companies can focus on their core activities while ensuring efficient handling of goods from origin to end customer. This service is commonly used in industries like retail, automotive, and healthcare, where complex logistics operations are required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in contract logistics?

To excel in Contract Logistics, a strong understanding of supply chain management, inventory control, and logistics operations is essential, typically supported by a degree in logistics or business and relevant experience. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), and certifications such as APICS or CSCMP are highly valued. Excellent organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help professionals stand out in coordinating complex logistics processes. These competencies ensure efficient, cost-effective operations and high service quality for clients in a competitive logistics environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in contract logistics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in contract logistics often encounter challenges such as managing fluctuating client demands, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and ensuring timely delivery while maintaining cost efficiency. Adapting quickly to changes in order volumes and navigating complex supply chains require strong organizational and communication skills. Building robust relationships with clients and leveraging technology for real-time tracking can help address these challenges and ensure smooth operations.

Job description

Director Global Logistics job at Twist Bioscience. Portland, OR.

We are seeking a passionate, highly skilled, and results-driven leader to build and scale Twist Bioscienceโ€™s global logistics function. The Director of Logistics is responsible for overseeing all aspects of shipping, logistics, and warehousing operations โ€” including cold chain management and international distribution โ€” ensuring that our Next Gen Sequencing and DNA Synthesis products reach customers worldwide safely, compliantly, and on time. This senior leadership role requires deep expertise in biotech supply chains, cross-border regulatory requirements, and temperature-controlled logistics to support Twistโ€™s rapid growth and mission to transform life sciences.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doing
  • Lead and develop Twistโ€™s end-toโ€‘end logistics organization, including domestic and international shipping, warehousing, and cold chain operations, building a highโ€‘performing team aligned to company growth objectives.
  • Continuously improve cold chain logistics programs to ensure product integrity throughout storage, handling, and transportation through the supply base to customers.
  • Oversee international shipping operations including customs clearance, import/export compliance, Incoterms selection, and coordination with freight forwarders, brokers, and carriers across all major global trade lanes.
  • Manage warehouse operations across all Twistโ€™s facilities, ensuring bestโ€‘inโ€‘class inventory accuracy, space utilization, safety compliance, and order fulfillment performance for both commercial and R&D product lines.
  • Develop and manage relationships with couriers, cold chain logistics vendors, and freight forwarders; lead RFP/RFQ processes and negotiate contracts to optimize service levels and costs.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, Finance, and Customer Support teams to align logistics operations with production schedules, customer commitments, and cost targets.
  • Define and track key logistics KPIs and present regular performance reporting to senior leadership.
  • Develop scalable logistics infrastructure to support Twistโ€™s global expansion, including evaluation of regional distribution strategies, warehouse network optimization, and new market entry logistics planning.
  • Follow regulatory and ISO 13485.
What Youโ€™ll Bring to the Team
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, Engineering, or a related field required; advanced degree (MBA or MS) preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive logistics and supply chain experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role managing multiโ€‘site or global logistics operations in a life sciences, biotech, or pharmaceutical company.
  • Deep expertise in cold chain logistics, including validated temperatureโ€‘controlled transport (2โ€“8C, โ€“20C, โ€“80C/dry ice), and packaging qualification.
  • Proven track record in international shipping and trade compliance.
  • Strong warehousing and 3PL management experience, including WMS implementation and optimization, inventory control processes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop highโ€‘performing teams across multiple locations; a collaborative, servantโ€‘leadership style with the energy to inspire and hold teams accountable in a fastโ€‘paced environment.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with ERP/TMS/WMS systems (SAP preferred) for logistics management, as well as data analytics tools.
  • Excellent financial acumen with the ability to develop and manage a logistics budget, build business cases for capital investments, and identify costโ€‘reduction opportunities.
  • Strong executive communication and influencing skills; ability to present complex logistics data and strategic recommendations clearly to Cโ€‘suite audiences.
  • Relentless drive for results: willing to go above and beyond, thrive under ambiguity, and build scalable processes from the ground up in a highโ€‘growth biotech environment.
