Contract Lifecycle information

What are typical challenges faced in a Contract Lifecycle Manager role and how can they be addressed?

Contract Lifecycle Managers often encounter challenges such as managing multiple contracts with varying deadlines, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and coordinating between legal, procurement, and business teams. To address these, strong organizational skills, effective use of contract management software, and clear communication are essential. Building collaborative relationships across departments and proactively tracking contract milestones help prevent bottlenecks and ensure smooth contract renewals or negotiations.

What is Contract Lifecycle Management?

Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) refers to the process of managing contracts from their initial creation and negotiation through execution, compliance, renewal, and eventual expiration. It involves streamlining and automating each stage of a contract's life to reduce risks, improve compliance, and enhance operational efficiency. CLM is used by organizations to ensure that contractual agreements are properly managed, tracked, and analyzed throughout their entire duration. Effective CLM helps companies avoid missed deadlines, ensure regulatory compliance, and create stronger business relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Lifecycle Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Lifecycle Manager, you need a solid understanding of contract law, risk management, and business operations, typically supported by a degree in law, business, or a related field. Familiarity with contract lifecycle management (CLM) software, document management systems, and e-signature tools is commonly expected. Attention to detail, strong negotiation skills, and effective communication help professionals excel in managing contracts and stakeholder relationships. These skills are crucial for ensuring compliance, minimizing risks, and optimizing contract outcomes throughout the organization.

Your Role

Digital Realty is seeking a Contract Manager to support contract management activities across North America. Reporting to the Contract Management NAM Leader, this role is part of the global Contract Management team within the Legal, Risk, Sustainability, and Compliance organization. The Contract Manager will lead and oversee the end-to-end contract lifecycle, drive operational excellence, ensure compliance with legal and corporate policies, and partner closely with Legal, Sales, Finance, Operations, and other stakeholders to support efficient deal execution. This role also plays a key role in process optimization, contract governance, knowledge management, reporting, and Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) system enhancements.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the review, execution, administration, and management of commercial agreements, including MSAs, Service Orders, amendments, novations, and other routine agreements.
  • Ensure contracts comply with company policies, legal requirements, risk tolerance standards, and corporate governance expectations.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex or high-risk contractual matters and identify risks while recommending mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain accurate contract records, documentation, data integrity, and confidentiality of sensitive business information.
  • Support contract audits, contractual obligation tracking, reporting requirements, and compliance initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement of contract management processes, workflows, controls, automation efforts, and best practices.
  • Generate dashboards, metrics, and reports that provide contract insights and support business decision-making.
  • Act as the primary resource for contract-related and CLM-related questions, including template selection, contract hierarchy, system data validation, and access management.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Sales, Finance, and Operations teams to support deal structuring, contract interpretation, and timely execution.
  • Support strategic initiatives involving CLM optimization, AI-driven contract data enhancement, process transformation, scalability efforts, and team onboarding and training activities.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Legal Studies, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in contract management, legal operations, contract administration, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of contract law principles, commercial agreements, and contract lifecycle management practices.
  • Experience managing high-volume workloads in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience identifying contractual risks and developing practical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Proficiency with Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) platforms, preferably Conga.
  • Experience supporting cross-functional teams and partnering with Legal, Sales, Finance, and Operations stakeholders.
  • Experience with contract negotiation, in-house legal team collaboration, or global/multi-regional organizations is preferred.
