What is a contract laborer?

Contract laborers are workers who are hired on a temporary basis to complete specific tasks or projects for a company, rather than being permanent employees. They typically work under the terms of a contract that outlines the duration, responsibilities, and compensation for the job. Contract laborers can be found in a variety of industries, including construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and services. Their employment is usually project-based, and they may work for multiple employers over time. Unlike full-time employees, contract laborers often do not receive benefits such as health insurance or paid time off.

To thrive as a Contract Laborer, you need physical stamina, basic technical skills, and familiarity with workplace safety practices, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Reliability, good communication, and the ability to follow instructions are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely, meeting project deadlines and quality standards.

What are some common challenges faced by contract laborers, and how can they be managed?

Contract laborers often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new work environments, managing inconsistent work schedules, and ensuring clear communication with supervisors and team members. Job Title: Yard Attendant

Job Description

The Yard Attendant supports daily yard operations by recording key information on incoming vehicles, maintaining their cleanliness and condition, and performing general yard upkeep. You will work as part of a small, reliable, and fast-paced team, handling a variety of outdoor tasks in all weather conditions. This role suits someone who is self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a busy yard environment.

Responsibilities

  • Record key information on incoming vehicles using a tablet, iPad, or paper-based forms, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data.
  • Perform thorough cleaning and detailing of vehicles, including interior and exterior cleaning, to maintain a high standard of presentation.
  • Conduct basic condition and quality checks on vehicles and document findings through written reports and photos as required.
  • Use tablets, cameras, and other devices to capture and upload information, photos, and reports related to yard inventory and vehicle status.
  • Carry out general yard maintenance tasks such as snow removal, weeding, and general cleanup to keep the yard safe, organized, and presentable.
  • Handle, move, and position vehicles and other items safely within the yard, following established procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Lift, sort, and organize items as needed to support efficient yard operations and inventory management.
  • Work in a fast-paced outdoor environment, adapting to changing tasks and priorities throughout the day.
  • Communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and occasionally customers to coordinate work and provide updates on tasks.
  • Collaborate with approximately 8–10 other yard attendants and yard staff, supporting each other to meet daily operational goals.
  • Optionally learn and operate forklifts or loaders (with training provided) to assist with moving items in the yard.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures while working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, and cold temperatures.
  • Maintain reliability and punctuality by consistently attending scheduled shifts and completing assigned tasks on time.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain, snow, and cold.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform reporting or auditing tasks using paper forms or tablets.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting information and interacting with team members and customers.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of tasks and responsibilities rather than performing a single repetitive duty.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and get along well with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Reliability and strong attendance, with a commitment to completing assigned work.
  • Capability to perform general labor tasks such as lifting, sorting, cleaning, and yard work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar industry or yard, general labor, or outdoor work environment.
  • Basic computer skills and comfort using tablets, cameras, or other digital devices.
  • Customer service experience and the ability to interact professionally with customers when required.
  • Experience with inventory, condition or quality reporting, and documentation.
  • Interest in learning forklift or loader operation; training may be provided and this is considered an asset.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours or shifts during busy periods, especially in winter when overtime opportunities may be available.

Why Work Here?

You will join a hardworking and supportive team that values reliability, teamwork, and a positive attitude. New hires receive training to help them succeed, and the role offers full-time hours with opportunities for overtime, especially during the busy winter season. The position is structured as a contract with strong potential for long-term engagement and eventual transition to a permanent role based on performance. You will work in an environment where colleagues enjoy each other’s company, maintain a fast pace, and take pride in the work they do outdoors.
