Dedicated to helping the U's faculty inventors bring their innovations to market, the Technology Licensing Office is responsible for all aspects of innovation management: invention disclosure, patent prosecution, licensing, startup formation and support, equity management, and early-stage funding. TLO's mission is to generate economic returns for the university and the state of Utah, expand the university's reputation for innovation, and positively impact society. TLO evaluates over 200 new disclosures annually and has over 1,300 unique technologies in its portfolio. More than 500 technologies are currently licensed, while the remaining 800 are spread across various phases of commercial development. TLO creates startup companies as one vehicle for commercializing technologies, supporting the formation of 10-20 each year. Responsibilities
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
  • Draft and negotiate confidentiality, material and data transfer, and other agreements as assigned covering a range of transactions.
  • Coordinate and review documents with University offices, including Office of Sponsored Projects, Office of General Counsel, Conflict of Interest, and Institutional Review Board, as appropriate.
  • Explain contract terminology to clients and other interested parties in simple, everyday language.
  • Monitor progress according the submission date and deadlines to ensure drafts and documents are completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain records for correspondence and documentation in relation to established contracts and those in progress.
  • Proofread, edit, and fact-check legal documents for accuracy and consistency.
  • Monitor contract expiration dates and renew, extend, or document expiration, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with a legal team consisting of lawyers, paralegals, and office staff.
  • Prepare, maintain, and follow standard operating procedures for various contract team functions.
  • Collect, monitor, document and report on metrics to track and represent progress, accomplishments, and workflow.
  • Ensure database and other internal systems are updated and maintained, including updating contact, account, and contract information as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.


Preferences
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; two years experience working with federal or private funding agencies on grants, contracts, or other agreements (preferably within an academic or higher education complex), or equivalency; the ability to work effectively and efficiently under extreme pressure; and demonstrated communication and organizational skills required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills, as well as comprehensive knowledge of current contractual language legal terminology also preferred
