Contract Ems Scada Engineer information

Is SCADA part of EMS?

In the context of a Contract EMS SCADA Engineer role, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are often integrated with EMS (Energy Management Systems) to monitor and control power grid operations. While SCADA is a broader technology used across various industries, within EMS, it specifically supports real-time data acquisition and system control for energy management. Understanding both systems and their integration is essential for this role.

What is the difference between Contract Ems Scada Engineer vs Contract Ems Automation Engineer?

AspectContract Ems Scada EngineerContract Ems Automation Engineer
CertificationsSCADA, EMS, or related control system certificationsAutomation, control systems, or PLC certifications

Job description

Why This Role Exists
This role sits at the center of real-time grid operations.
At MGE, operators rely on EMS, SCADA, telemetry, and system models every minute of every day. This position exists to ensure those systems are accurate, reliable, and aligned with real-world conditions-so operators can trust what they see and act with confidence.
If you're the kind of engineer who cares about accuracy, operational reality, and system ownership, this is where your work has immediate impact.
What You'll Own
Real-Time EMS & SCADA Systems
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot EMS and SCADA environments (production, test, training)
  • Ensure accuracy of telemetry, controls, alarms, and operator displays
  • Support upgrades, patching, and integration efforts

Operational Support & System Reliability
  • Investigate and resolve issues impacting real-time system performance
  • Work directly with control room operators to support day-to-day operations
  • Participate in on-call rotation supporting critical systems

Operational Models & Data Integrity
  • Develop, validate, and maintain system models across transmission, distribution, and generation
  • Perform telemetry mapping, corrections, and validation
  • Ensure alignment across EMS, SCADA, GIS, and related platforms

Operator Situational Awareness
  • Design and maintain SCADA one-lines and operational displays
  • Validate system behavior to ensure it reflects real-world conditions
  • Support system readiness during storms and high-impact events

Modernization & Integration
  • Contribute to EMS upgrades and system integration initiatives
  • Support expanding telemetry across DER and emerging technologies
  • Work across engineering, IT, and operations to improve system performance

What Success Looks Like
  • Operators trust the system during both normal and high-stress conditions
  • Telemetry, models, and displays consistently reflect real-world behavior
  • Issues are identified and resolved quickly with minimal operational impact
  • Systems improve over time through thoughtful ownership and stewardship

What We're Looking For
Core Experience
  • Experience supporting real-time operational systems
  • Hands-on work with EMS, SCADA, preferably GEV eTerra or similar
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in live environments
  • Understanding of telemetry and communications (e.g., DNP3, ICCP)

Valued Experience
  • Exposure to control room or operations center environments
  • Experience with EMS, ADMS, or DMS platforms
  • Understanding of power systems or industrial operations

Typical Backgrounds
Strong candidates often come from:
  • Utility EMS / SCADA engineering
  • Distribution or transmission operations support
  • Industrial operational technology roles in energy, water, or manufacturing

Why MGE
  • Direct impact on the safety and reliability of your local community
  • Ownership of systems that matter every day
  • Opportunity to modernize critical infrastructure
  • Collaborative, high-trust engineering and operations environment

Work Location
  • This hybrid role is based at our Madison, WI headquarters. While three days onsite is the minimum, team collaboration and business needs may require additional in-office presence.

Pre-employment will require satisfactory completion of a background check and drug screen.
We are an AA/EOE employer and consider all qualified candidates without regard to protected status.
