What is a Contract Developer job?

A Contract Developer is a software developer hired on a temporary or project basis to create, modify, or maintain applications and systems. They typically work for clients or companies under a contract agreement rather than as a full-time employee. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with teams to meet project requirements. Contract Developers often specialize in specific programming languages or technologies and may work remotely or on-site. The duration and terms of their work vary based on the contract and project scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Developer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Developer, strong programming skills, experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid educational background in computer science or related fields are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools, and possibly certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are advantageous. Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for success in contract-based work. These skills enable a Contract Developer to efficiently deliver quality results, meet client expectations, and thrive in dynamic, project-oriented environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Developers and how can they be managed?

Contract Developers often work on multiple projects or with various clients, which can present challenges such as rapidly adapting to different codebases, meeting tight deadlines, and managing shifting priorities. Effective communication with stakeholders and clear agreement on project scope and deliverables can help minimize misunderstandings. Staying organized through productivity tools and maintaining continuous skills development also contribute to handling workload fluctuations. By proactively addressing these challenges, contract developers can deliver high-quality work and build strong professional relationships.

Job description

Manager, EPC Contracts

Scottsdale, AZ

Arevon is a U.S. energy leader committed to powering America with affordable, reliable, and secure homegrown energy. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, and with a regional office in New York City, the company's experienced and dedicated team develops, finances, builds, owns, and operates renewable energy projects nationwide. With a strong track record in utility-scale solar and energy storage, Arevon is a trusted partner to utilities and businesses seeking cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions. By prioritizing American manufacturing and domestic energy production, the company invests in U.S. jobs, strengthens local economies, and advances the country's energy independence.

The Position

Arevon is recruiting for the position of Contracts Manager, an outstanding opportunity for individuals seeking an exciting, high-growth work environment in one of the most important industries for the 21st century.

Key Responsibilities

The Contracts Manager is a key individual contributor on Arevon's Project Execution team, owning commercial contracting for utility-scale solar and energy storage projects across the full lifecycle from RFP and negotiation strategy through execution, change management, and closeout. The Contracts Manager will independently run negotiations with EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers, and service providers; drive internal alignment and approvals across Legal, Finance, Engineering, Development, and Construction; and build scalable, auditable contracting practices that protect Arevon's risk position while enabling on-time project delivery. Additionally, the Contracts Manager be responsible for:

Strategic Negotiation & Contract Execution

  • Independently lead and execute complex commercial negotiations for a wide range of agreements crucial to the development, construction, and operation of PV + energy storage projects (including EPC, O&M, equipment supply agreements, master terms, amendments, and change orders).
  • Draft and negotiate contract terms (including redlines) to align with Arevon's risk profile, policies, and commercial objectives.
  • Own contract strategies and negotiation plans for assigned procurements, including issue-spotting, fallback positions, and approval pathways.
  • Lead internal alignment and secure required approvals by partnering with Legal, Finance, Engineering, and other stakeholders; clearly communicate risks, options, and recommended paths forward.
  • Contribute to and maintain contract templates, playbooks, and forms that improve consistency, speed, and auditability.

Redline, Version Control & Document Management

  • Own the contract redline and version control process across assigned negotiations, maintaining a clear decision trail and single source of truth.
  • Maintain document control for contracts, amendments, warranties, and insurance certificates, ensuring a clean and auditable history of edits and approvals.
  • Implement and follow disciplined version control practices to prevent errors and preserve negotiation integrity.
  • Evaluate, accept, and reject counterparty redlines; clearly explain the rationale for Arevon's positions to both internal stakeholders and external counterparties.

External & Internal Communication

  • Serve as the primary commercial point of contact for assigned external counterparties, building strong working relationships to support efficient negotiations and issue resolution.
  • Gather input from business partners on pain points and lessons learned; translate that feedback into contract language and process improvements.
  • Communicate contractual issues, risks, and negotiation status to stakeholders and approvers, including clear recommendations and decision-ready summaries.
  • Support tax equity investor diligence for project financing by providing clear, accurate summaries of key contract terms and deal protections.

Procurement & Process Optimization

  • Support competitive procurement events by reviewing RFP packages, supporting bidder communications and clarifications, and drafting award/rejection communications to maintain a clear sourcing and approvals record.
  • Support contract reporting metrics and compliance auditing.
  • Drive continuous improvement of contracting workflows and controls by drafting, socializing, and implementing repeatable processes.
  • Own post-execution contract management for assigned agreements, including key obligations, renewals, expirations, and terminations.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience independently managing the contract lifecycle in the construction or renewables sector.
  • Proficiency in contract redlining and version control using Microsoft Word's "Track Changes" and document comparison software.
  • Excellent negotiation, verbal, and written communication skills with a proven ability to manage external relationships and represent a company's interests effectively.
  • Ability to interpret and draft complex contract language with precision, including identifying nuance, intent, and risk implications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including Legal, Finance, and Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive workstreams, influence outcomes without formal authority, and bring stakeholders to closure on time-sensitive decisions.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities; able to reassess approach quickly and communicate tradeoffs clearly.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of working in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerBI or other visualization platforms are a plus).
