Contract Design Engineer information

What is a contract design engineer?

A Contract Design Engineer is a professional who designs and develops products, systems, or components on a temporary or project-based contract. They typically work for multiple companies or clients, applying engineering principles to create efficient and functional designs. Responsibilities may include CAD modeling, prototyping, and collaborating with teams to meet project requirements. Contract roles offer flexibility and varied experience but may require frequent job searching.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract design engineer?

To thrive as a Contract Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, proficiency in CAD software, and a relevant engineering degree such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks), project management platforms, and certifications like PE or Chartered Engineer status are often preferred. Strong problem-solving, time management, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with cross-functional teams and meeting project deadlines. These abilities are essential for delivering high-quality design solutions on a contractual basis, ensuring project success and client satisfaction.

What are the typical work arrangements and expectations for a contract design engineer?

Contract Design Engineers often work on specific projects with defined durations, which may require flexibility in both location and hours depending on client needs. You might work independently or as part of an engineering team, collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and other stakeholders to deliver design solutions within set timelines. The role frequently involves juggling multiple projects simultaneously, requiring adaptability and strong organizational skills. This variety can provide exciting opportunities to expand your technical expertise, build a robust professional network, and gain exposure to diverse industries and design challenges.

Job description

Company Description
Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system's 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.
Our In-House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services to meet operations' needs in a manner consistent with BEDC's core values of safety, schedule, quality, and customer service. IHD supports projects from the capital project initiation process through preliminary design, design, procurement construction, and finally with the turnover to operations. IHD's Design Services division includes Architectural, Site Civil, Structural, Process Mechanical/HVAC, Water Tunnel Mechanical Systems, and Electrical discipline sections. Each design section prepares design and construction documents including engineering plans and specifications for the construction of water supply, sewer, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. IHD projects are typically of the highest priority for the Agency. IHD's Engineering Services includes the Quality Assurance, Laboratory Services, Specifications/Standard Operating Procedures, Sustainability, and BIM/CADD sections. The Engineering Services division focuses on project's sustainability, resiliency, laboratory material testing, quality reviews and inspections, standardization of documents, project delivery standards and uses current BIM/CADD technology to streamline engineering design processes.
The Electrical section prepares engineering documents for construction of the most complex electrical power distribution, instrumentation, process controls, communications, lighting, fire safety and security systems undertaken by In-House Design.
BEDC seeks to hire two Assistant Electrical Engineers for IHD's Electrical Section, located in Queens, NY. Under supervision of the lead design engineer, the Assistant Electrical Engineers assist in implementing capital projects at various DEP facilities through the design and construction phase by preparing engineering documents including drawings and specifications. Specific responsibilities include performing engineering work to prepare engineering documents for design and construction of electrical power distribution, communication, instrumentation & controls, lighting, fire safety and security systems undertaken by IHD for water supply facilities, water tunnels, wastewater treatment plants, administrative buildings and other DEP infrastructure. Power systems distribution includes, but not limited to, low, medium and high voltage systems, electrical substations, switchgear, motor control centers and emergency power generation systems. Instrumentation and Control systems include, but not limited to water & wastewater process, pump and motor controls, instrumentation, monitoring systems, distributed Control Units, Automation, HMI and SCADA systems. The Assistant Electrical Engineers will be required to travel to job sites to perform site investigations and attend site meetings during design and construction phases of projects, as required.
**** Only those applicants with permanent Civil Service Status as an Assistant Electrical Engineer or who have already taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam for Assistant Electrical Engineer (Exam # 7007) are eligible to apply to this JVN. If you do not have permanent civil service status as an Assistant Electrical Engineer or have taken Exam #7007, please do not apply for this position as you will not be considered for an interview. ****
