Executive Design Engineer information

What is an executive design engineer?

Executive Design Engineers are senior professionals responsible for leading the design and development of new products, systems, or components within an organization. They oversee technical teams, manage complex engineering projects, and ensure that designs meet both client requirements and regulatory standards. In addition to hands-on engineering work, they often contribute to strategic decision-making, budgeting, and collaboration with other departments. Their expertise helps drive innovation and maintain high-quality standards throughout the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive design engineer?

To thrive as an Executive Design Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, product design, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and substantial industry experience. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications like Six Sigma is commonly required. Outstanding problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in managing teams and driving innovative solutions. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality, market-ready designs that align with business objectives and client requirements.

How does an executive design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Executive Design Engineers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between design, engineering, and management teams. They regularly facilitate communication between departments such as R&D, manufacturing, and marketing to ensure that technical specifications align with business objectives. This collaboration often involves leading design reviews, integrating feedback from multiple stakeholders, and resolving technical challenges to keep projects on schedule. Effective teamwork and leadership skills are essential, as these engineers frequently mentor junior staff and champion best practices throughout the product lifecycle.

Job description

Job Summary:
Aqua is a fintech company focused on creating a platform for independent broker-dealers and financial advisors to invest in alternative assets. They are seeking a founding design engineer to lead design efforts across product, brand, and marketing, ensuring that complex investment workflows are transformed into simple, trustworthy user experiences.
Responsibilities:
• Own product design and implementation — Drive the complete design process from concept to production code, translating complex investment workflows into intuitive interfaces built with React, TypeScript, and Tailwind
• Shape Aqua's visual identity — Establish our brand guidelines and design system, creating a cohesive visual language that signals trust, sophistication, and ease of use
• Create high-impact brand and marketing assets — Design sales decks, one-pagers, conference materials, and digital content that close deals and maintain consistency across all touchpoints
• Be the voice of design — Champion design thinking across the organization while establishing the foundations (processes, tools, culture) for the future design team
• Partner with leadership — Work directly with founders and executives to scale the design function as the company grows
Qualifications:
Required:
• 3-5+ years designing and building in startups, with experience as a product designer, design engineer, or frontend engineer with strong design sensibility
• Fluent in both design and code — You're as comfortable in Figma as you are writing React components and can move seamlessly between designing interfaces and implementing them
• Your portfolio shows end-to-end work: polished product interfaces you've coded and brand assets you've designed
• Comfortable with ambiguity — You thrive in early-stage environments, know when to prioritize speed vs. polish, and don't need detailed specs to produce great work
• Strong communicator — You can articulate design decisions to both technical and business stakeholders and build consensus across teams
• Excited about ownership — You want to be the founding design engineer, setting the standard for everything from iconography to interaction patterns to brand voice
• Proficiency in modern design tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite) and frontend technologies (React, TypeScript, Tailwind/CSS)
Preferred:
• Experience in fintech, wealth management, or B2B SaaS is a plus but not required
Company:
Aqua is the turnkey alternative investment platform (TAIP) or the TAMP for alts. Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in New City, USA, with a team of 11-50 employees. The company is currently Early Stage.
