What is a contract CPA?

A Contract CPA is a certified public accountant who works on a temporary, freelance, or project basis rather than as a full-time employee. They typically handle tasks like tax preparation, financial reporting, audits, and consulting for businesses or individuals. Contract CPAs provide flexibility to companies needing expert financial guidance without committing to a permanent hire. This role is ideal for professionals who want to manage their own schedules and work with multiple clients.

What are the typical work arrangements and client expectations for a contract CPA?

Contract CPAs often work on a project or retainer basis, which can involve short-term or long-term assignments depending on client needs. You may provide services remotely, on-site, or through a hybrid arrangement, so flexibility and adaptability are key. Clients expect reliable turnaround times, clear communication regarding project status, and proactive identification of tax or compliance issues. Your ability to manage multiple projects and quickly integrate with different teams will help ensure successful client relationships and lead to repeat business or referrals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the contract CPA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract CPA, you need expertise in accounting principles, tax regulations, and financial reporting, backed by a CPA license and relevant accounting degree. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and tax preparation tools is typically required. Excellent time management, organizational skills, and clear client communication help set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate, timely results while effectively collaborating with clients and managing multiple projects remotely or on-site.

Why are so many contract CPAs quitting?

Contract CPAs often leave their roles due to high workload, inconsistent income, and limited job security compared to full-time positions. Additionally, the flexible nature of contract work can lead to burnout and challenges in maintaining work-life balance, prompting some to seek more stable employment or different career paths.

CPA - 5+ Years of Experience

Are you good at your job but tired of unrealistic billable hours and long tax season days? Do you want to talk with clients and help them make good decisions to run their businesses and line up their goals with tax efficient strategies? Are you smart, have good technical skills, and can figure things out?

We might be a good fit.

We need someone who can do the work.

Someone who can take a QuickBooks file that a client tried to record transactions in, figure out what is off and where they messed up, and then go fix it.

Someone who can put information in a tax return, look at it to interpret the information, talk to the client about it, and be confident that what you are handing on to the next step is good work.

Someone who can collaborate with team members to get a project done.

Someone who can read a notice, figure out what needs to happen, and call the tax authority and handle it.

Someone who wants client interaction, takes ownership of their job, and can figure things out.

Someone we can hand a file to who can bring it back 80% ready (no one knows everything).

What we don't care about?

Staying late just so someone sees you working late – just get the work done.

Working a thousand hours during tax season – you're too tired to be productive and extensions exist for a reason. Besides, you have family and friends, and they deserve your time too.

Wanting to start your day a little earlier so you get home earlier.

Needing to run home to let the dog out or pick up the kids.

What do we care about?

Having a good team and taking care of them

Providing quality service to our clients.

Talking to our clients and helping them understand their taxes and tax strategies and how best to meet their goals.

Answering our clients' questions, even if it's explaining that what their buddy told them at the bar was only 30% of the story and why that strategy doesn't work for them.

Being right about our answer, even if it's not what someone wants to hear.

We are growing and ready to expand our team. Are you a good fit?

What you need to know:

Our CPA firm provides tax and accounting services to clients of all sizes across a range of industries, as well as tax planning and resolution services.

We pride ourselves on being more than just data pushers: our goal is to empower clients with knowledge to make better decisions with timely, accurate information and good advice.

We are engaged participants in our clients' businesses.

We advise them.

We are their problem solver.

Our team is mostly in the office, and you would be too, initially. We don't foresee this being a fully remote role in the near future, but we do have flexibility.

We just need the right person to join our team as we continue to grow. If that's you, lets have a conversation.
