Contract Audit information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract auditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Auditor, you need a strong background in accounting, finance, and auditing principles, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field and relevant certifications such as CPA or CISA. Proficiency with audit management software, data analysis tools, and ERP systems is commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for interpreting complex contracts and presenting findings. These skills ensure accurate contract compliance evaluations, risk mitigation, and reliable reporting for organizational decision-making.

What is contract audit?

A contract audit is a systematic review and evaluation of contracts, agreements, and related documents to ensure compliance with contractual terms, regulations, and policies. Auditors assess the accuracy of financial records, identify discrepancies, and verify that both parties are fulfilling their obligations. This process helps organizations manage risk, detect fraud or errors, and improve contract management practices. Contract audits are common in government, construction, and other industries where large or complex contracts are involved.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in contract audit roles, and how can they be managed effectively?

Contract auditors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex contractual language, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and managing tight deadlines. Navigating ambiguous terms or identifying potential risks in contracts requires strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Effective communication with both clients and internal teams helps clarify requirements and expectations, while staying updated on regulatory changes ensures accurate audits. Building strong organizational habits and leveraging audit management software can also help manage workload and improve efficiency.

Why You'll Love Working at Boldt

  • High-Impact Projects: Complex industrial work that matters
  • Lead & Mentor: Learn today, lead tomorrow
  • Rich Culture: What started as a carpentry shop has grown into a multi-million-dollar company built on relationships and craftsmanship
  • High Performance: By people, strengthened through AI and technology that enhance collaboration, transparency, and results.

At Boldt, high performance starts with strong relationships. We believe the best projects are delivered by teams that trust each other, communicate openly, and take ownership from the field to the office. Our culture blends accountability with support; where learning, mentorship, and collaboration, power results. You won't just contribute to projects that matter; you'll grow alongside people who are investing in your success.
What You Bring
  • A bachelor's degree is required, preferably in business administration, accounting, finance, or operations management.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in government contracting, including pre-award and post-award contract management.
  • Certified Federal Contracts Manager (CFCM) or Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM) designation preferred.
  • Working knowledge of FAR and CAS which includes experience with Incurred Cost Proposals/Submissions (ICP/ICS), Forward Pricing Rate Agreements (FPRA), and certified cost or pricing data requirements, in general.
  • Experience interfacing with the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) preferred.
  • A valid driver's license may be required. Individuals in this role may be subject to an annual Motor Vehicle Records check. The outcome of any MVR checks conducted may negatively impact the persons' ability to participate in any vehicle program provided by the company, including but not limited to the ability to drive a personal vehicle on behalf of The Boldt Company or rent a vehicle through for business travel purposes.

Nice to Have
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and improving systems and procedures.
  • Exceptional communication skills, and ability to quickly build trust and develop positive relationships with co-workers, government officials, vendors, and customers.
