What is the difference between Contract Ansible Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectContract Ansible EngineerDevOps Engineer
CertificationsRelevant certifications like Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Ansible certificationsCertifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Docker, Kubernetes
Work EnvironmentProject-based, often remote, focused on automation and configuration managementContinuous integration/deployment pipelines, cloud environments, infrastructure management
Industry UsageIT, cloud services, automation-focused companiesSoftware development, cloud providers, enterprise IT

While both roles involve automation and cloud technologies, a Contract Ansible Engineer specializes in automation using Ansible for configuration management, whereas a DevOps Engineer has a broader scope including CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and overall system reliability. The Contract Ansible Engineer role is more focused on automation tasks, often in a project-based setting, while DevOps Engineers work across development and operations teams to streamline software delivery processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Ansible Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Ansible Engineer, you need strong expertise in automation, configuration management, and scripting languages, typically supported by experience with Ansible and relevant IT infrastructure. Familiarity with tools like Ansible Tower, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and certifications such as Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you adapt to varied client environments and requirements. These skills ensure efficient, reliable automation solutions that meet client needs and support seamless IT operations.

What are the typical challenges a Contract Ansible Engineer faces when joining a new client project?

Contract Ansible Engineers often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to a client’s existing infrastructure, understanding legacy automation scripts, and aligning with established deployment workflows. They may also need to integrate Ansible with other tools already in use, which requires strong communication with DevOps teams and stakeholders to ensure smooth collaboration. Efficiently documenting changes and proactively managing configuration drift are crucial to successful project outcomes and client satisfaction.

What are Contract Ansible Engineers?

Contract Ansible Engineers are IT professionals who are hired on a temporary or project basis to design, implement, and manage automation solutions using Ansible, an open-source automation tool. They help organizations automate the provisioning, configuration, and management of IT infrastructure, often working with cloud environments or large-scale deployments. As contractors, they typically work for a defined period or until the completion of specific projects, providing specialized expertise without a long-term employment commitment.

About Trilogy Innovations

At Trilogy Innovations, we are committed to driving meaningful change for our customers and communities through smart, innovative technology that solves real problems. As a growing systems and software engineering company, we partner across public and private sectors to modernize enterprise systems, strengthen security, and deliver high value solutions. We are scaling with purpose, investing in our people, processes, and platforms as we expand. We work hard, think creatively, and value every perspective as we push boundaries and build systems that matter.
Who you are

Trilogy Innovations, Inc. is seeking an Ansible Automation Engineer to design, build, and maintain the automation pipeline underpinning a federal RHEL infrastructure modernization program. This role owns AAP strategy and implementation, playbook and role development, STIG/SCAP automation, and CI/CD integration from Day 1 through contract closeout.

What you will do:

  • Design, develop, and implement Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform (AAP) workflows, playbooks, roles, and job templates to support RHEL provisioning, configuration management, patch deployment, and system lifecycle management.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize automated security compliance solutions, including STIG and SCAP remediation aligned with DISA STIGs and CIS Benchmark standards.
  • Integrate automation solutions with enterprise platforms, including Red Hat Satellite, Terraform Infrastructure as Code (IaC), identity management systems (SSSD, Active Directory, LDAP), and observability and monitoring tools.
  • Build and maintain scalable automation frameworks that improve operational efficiency, consistency, and compliance across large-scale Linux environments.
  • Manage automation content within version-controlled repositories, ensuring adherence to code management standards, peer reviews, testing, and change control processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, security, and infrastructure teams to identify automation opportunities and implement best practices for system administration and compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing automation workflows, reducing manual effort, and increasing system reliability and security.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), implementation guides, and training materials.
  • Participate in knowledge transfer activities, mentoring team members and ensuring operational teams are equipped to support automated solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve automation-related issues, providing ongoing support and optimization of deployed automation capabilities.

How success is measured:

Success in this role is defined by delivering scalable, reliable automation that improves efficiency and supports program goals.

You will be successful if you:

  • Develop and implement a clear automation strategy aligned to program milestones
  • Build reusable, well-documented Ansible content adopted across the team
  • Successfully deploy and integrate AAP with enterprise tools and CI/CD pipelines
  • Deliver automation for patching, compliance, and day-2 operations
  • Improve system consistency, speed, and reliability through automation
  • Support compliance and contribute to audit readiness
  • Mentor team members and increase overall automation maturity

What you bring
We require:
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent professional experience accepted.
  • Minimum 10+ years of IT experience, with 5+ years expertise in Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, and a track record of encoding security baselines as repeatable automated controls in federal environments.
  • RHCE or Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation certifications
  • Experience automating STIG and OpenSCAP compliance enforcement
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tooling (GitLab CI, Jenkins, or equivalent)
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Security Badge and successfully adjudicate an NBIS eApp background investigation prior to start.
Nice to have:
  • Active federal clearance (Public Trust, Secret, Top Secret, or TS/SCI) preferred, or DOE badge eligibility is a strong differentiator.
  • Experience working within a federal security framework

Work environment: Remote-first role with occasional travel

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary range: $152,000 - $156,000

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Performance bonus eligibility
  • 401k with company match
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Health Savings Account
  • Professional development programs
  • Employee referral bonus program
